The xTool S1 is an enclosed desktop laser engraver and cutter built around a 10W diode laser. It is designed for people starting out with laser work, and for small workshops that want a larger bed than a pocket-sized machine offers. Here is what the main specifications mean in practice.

Power, spot size and bed

The S1 uses a 10W (10,000 mW) laser with a spot of 0.06 x 0.04 mm. A smaller spot generally means finer lines and sharper detail, which xTool says allows near photographic engravings on wood, leather, paper, stone and glass. The bed measures 23.93 x 15.16 inches (about 61 x 38.5 cm). xTool says that is large enough for door signs, or for engraving up to 119 dog tags in one go.

Longer work is possible with the AutoPassthrough feature, which xTool says handles projects up to 118 inches (3000 mm) with an auto-feeder.

Positioning and software

xTool calls its positioning aid Pin-point Positioning and says it helps line up a design on the material. The machine has auto-focus, which sets the distance to the surface for you. It is operated through xTool Creative Space (XCS), software that xTool says includes AI-assisted design from a text prompt. The brand also says it has pre-tested settings for more than 400 materials and offers over 1,000 project tutorials. Preset settings are a useful starting point, but it is wise to test on scrap first, since materials vary.

Enclosure and safety features

The cover is described as Class 1 safe, filtering 99% of laser light so goggles are not needed in normal use. The enclosure also contains smoke and reduces noise. xTool lists five flame sensors that halt operation if a flame is detected, an emergency stop button and a lid-open stop. Laser cutting always carries a fire risk, so the standard advice applies: never leave it running unattended, keep a suitable extinguisher nearby and ventilate the room as the manual says.

Expandability

The S1 accepts four switchable laser modules (10W, 20W, 40W and 2W infrared), according to xTool, so the machine can grow with your projects. Other listed add-ons are a riser base for taller items, the RA2 Pro rotary for cylinders such as tumblers and rings, the auto-feeder and a screen-printing option. The listing notes that accessories are sold separately unless they come in a bundle.

The frame is 3 mm aerospace-grade aluminium. The machine weighs 44.1 lb (about 20 kg).

Who it suits

It suits hobbyists, craft sellers and small-batch makers who want an enclosed machine that works from first use. It also suits people planning to upgrade the laser later. Those who need to cut thick hardwood or metal should look closely at which module and material combinations xTool supports.

What to check before you buy

  • Space: at 44 lb with a bed of nearly 24 inches, it needs a sturdy bench with room for the lid to open.
  • Venting: even an enclosed engraver needs an exhaust or filter. Check how to vent it.
  • Materials: some plastics and coatings give off harmful fumes when lasered. Use only approved materials.
  • Accessories: riser, rotary, feeder and extra modules are separate unless bundled.
  • Software: confirm that XCS runs on your computer or phone.
