The xTool S1 1064nm Infrared Laser Module (model MXD-K101-001) is an add-on for the xTool S1 laser engraver. It swaps in an infrared laser with 2W (2,000mW) of output, which xTool positions for marking metals, plastics, acrylic and other materials, with jewellery making as a main example. It is an accessory, not a complete machine.

Why 1064nm matters

A laser's wavelength decides what materials absorb its energy. Many hobby diode lasers work at visible blue wavelengths and handle wood, leather and card well, but they struggle with bare metals, which reflect much of that light. A 1064nm infrared laser is the wavelength commonly used in fibre-style marking systems, and metals generally absorb it better. That is the reason for a separate module for this kind of work.

What it works on

xTool lists the following as materials it can engrave:

  • Metals, including gold, silver, platinum and copper.
  • Leather, with minimal burn marks according to xTool.
  • Plastics and acrylic, where xTool says performance is improved.
  • Glass and stone.

The brand also says it can cut aluminium, copper and stainless steel up to 0.05mm thick, which means thin foil rather than sheet. Treat it as a marking and engraving tool for thicker metal.

Precision and speed

The listing gives a 0.03mm laser spot, 0.01mm motion precision and an engraving speed of 600mm/s. The spot size is the width of the laser beam where it meets the work, and a finer spot lets you engrave small details such as text on a ring or bracelet. Real results still depend on the material, the settings and the focus.

Typical uses

xTool suggests personalising rings, bracelets and necklaces, and also plastic items such as computer mice, switches and suitcases. In general, a small work area suits jewellery and small parts better than large panels.

Compatibility and size

The module fits the xTool S1 laser engraver only. It will not work with other brands or other xTool models. The listing gives dimensions of 7.1 x 5.1 x 5.1 inches.

Laser safety

The listing states that this is a Class 4 laser product. Class 4 is the highest standard laser class, so follow the manual's safety instructions closely, including the recommended eye protection, enclosure and ventilation, and any rules where you live.

Who it suits

It suits owners of an S1 who want to mark metal or small plastic items, such as small-batch jewellery makers and hobbyists.

What to check before you buy

  • Machine: it is for the S1 only.
  • Materials: confirm the metals and plastics you plan to use are on the supported list.
  • Thickness: the cutting figure is for 0.05mm sheet.
  • Safety gear: check the manual's requirements for eyewear and enclosure.
  • Workspace: check ventilation and your local rules for Class 4 lasers.

The short version

  • A 2W, 1064nm infrared laser module for the xTool S1 only.
  • Aimed at metals, plastics, acrylic and leather, with a 0.03mm spot and 600mm/s speed.
  • Listed as a Class 4 laser product.
