The xTool P2S is an enclosed desktop CO2 laser that cuts and engraves materials such as acrylic, wood, glass and ceramic. It is aimed at makers, small workshops and craft businesses that want a larger bed and more cutting power than a typical hobby diode laser offers. Here is what its main specifications mean and what to think about before bringing one home.

What a 55W CO2 tube does

CO2 lasers produce infrared light that many non-metal materials absorb well, which is why they are common for cutting acrylic and wood and for engraving glass. xTool rates the P2S at 55W (55,000 mW) and says it cuts clear and coloured acrylic up to 20 mm thick and black walnut up to 18 mm in a single pass. Cutting thickness always depends on the material, its density and the speed you choose, so treat those figures as the brand's upper limits.

The listing also names glass, ceramic, slate, coated metals and anodized aluminum for engraving. A CO2 laser typically marks coated or anodized metal rather than cutting bare metal.

Bed size, pass-through and tall objects

The working bed is 26 x 14 inches. For longer pieces, xTool describes an Auto-Passthrough that feeds material up to 118 inches long. A Riser Base lifts the machine to take objects up to 8.4 inches high. Together, these cover long signs, large panels and taller items that would not fit in a smaller machine.

The P2S is also listed as compatible with the RA2 Pro Rotary for cylindrical items such as tumblers, mugs and rings, and has a 3D Curve Engraving function that builds a model of a curved surface so the engraving follows it.

Cameras, focus and speed

Two 16MP cameras give a live preview of the material, so designs can be positioned on the actual piece. A LiDAR ranging system handles autofocus, which xTool states is precise to 0.001 inch. Engraving speeds reach 600 mm/s, and a smart fill feature batches serial numbers, names and custom designs in one run.

Air, exhaust and enclosure

Cutting with a laser creates smoke, so airflow matters. xTool lists a dual-cylinder air pump for air assist, more powerful exhaust fans, and a 233.3 CFM exhaust fan. The enclosed design, optical path indicators and simpler routine maintenance are part of the same upgrade. Air assist typically blows smoke and flame away from the cut, which helps keep edges cleaner.

Safety features

The P2S is a Class 4 laser, the highest laser class, so it should be used strictly as the manual describes. xTool lists AI fire detection, an automatic lock and an emergency stop. Even so, a laser should never be left running unattended, and the exhaust needs a proper route outdoors or to a suitable filter. Follow the manual and local rules on ventilation, eye protection and fire safety.

Who it suits

It suits people making signs, personalised gifts, models, inlays and engraved glassware, as well as small businesses doing repeat jobs. Anyone who mainly wants to cut or mark bare metal would typically look at a fibre laser instead.

What to check before you buy

  • Space: the listing gives the dimensions as 44.1 x 29.1 x 13.8 inches, and you need extra room for pass-through material and the exhaust.
  • Ventilation: plan where the exhaust vents, and whether a window or duct is possible.
  • Materials: confirm the materials you plan to use are safe to laser. Some plastics, such as PVC, release harmful fumes.
  • Accessories: the rotary and riser base are separate options, so check what is in the box.
  • Software and upkeep: look at how the software works with your design files, and how often the lens, mirrors and tube need cleaning.
  • Power and cooling: check the electrical needs and cooling requirements in the manual.
