The xTool M2 is an enclosed craft machine that combines a 10W diode laser with a full-colour CMYK inkjet module. You can print a design in colour and then cut or engrave it in the same setup, which makes it a single machine for stickers, tags, signs and personalised gifts. Here is what each part does and what to think about before setting one up at home.
Print, then cut
Most hobby lasers only engrave and cut, so colour has to come from paint, a separate printer or coloured material. The M2 adds an inkjet module that prints in CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black, the four inks used to mix full-colour images). The workflow is print first, then let the laser cut around the printed design or engrave details into it.
That suits projects like stickers, bag tags and door signs, where you want a coloured design with a clean, exact outline.
The 10W diode laser
xTool lists the laser's output power as 10,000 mW, or 10W. That is optical output, the power in the beam itself, which is the figure that matters for engraving and cutting speed. Some laser makers quote electrical input instead, which looks larger.
Diode lasers typically engrave wood, leather and card well and cut thin sheet materials. xTool lists more than 300 compatible materials, including cardstock, felt, fabric, leather, paper and wood. As with any hobby laser, stick to materials the maker lists; some plastics, such as PVC, should never be laser-cut.
Dual cameras and alignment
Two built-in cameras give a live view of the work area, so you can see your material on screen and place the design where you want it. xTool's ACS system combines that camera view with the machine's motion control for what the brand calls "Place & Go": you place the material, and the machine lines up the design. Accurate alignment matters most for print-then-cut work, where the cut has to follow the printed edge.
The maximum working area is 16.7 x 12.5 inches (about 42 x 32 cm).
Software and templates
The M2 works with xTool Studio, which offers hundreds of ready-made templates and a built-in AI image generator that turns a text idea into a design. For beginners, templates are a quick way to learn how the machine handles different materials before designing from scratch.
Swappable modules
The M2 is modular. Alongside the 10W diode laser and the inkjet module, an optional 3W infrared (IR) laser for metal marking is sold separately. Infrared lasers work at a different wavelength from diode lasers, which is why they are typically used for marking metal surfaces.
The machine is fully enclosed with real-time monitoring, and xTool states that it is a Class 1 laser product. In laser classification, Class 1 covers products whose beam stays contained during normal use.
What to check before you buy
- Ventilation: cutting and engraving produce smoke and fumes. Check the manual's ventilation requirements and where the machine can vent.
- Space: check the machine's footprint, and the room needed to open it, in xTool's specifications against your table or bench.
- Materials and size: make sure your usual projects fit the 16.7 x 12.5 inch working area and appear on xTool's material list.
- Consumables: inkjet printing uses cartridges or ink; check what the module needs and how easily you can get it.
- What's in the box: the M2 10W, the CMYK inkjet printing module and a Deluxe Material Kit; the 3W IR laser is separate.
