The xTool M1 Ultra is a desktop craft machine that does several jobs in one frame: 20W laser engraving and cutting, vinyl and paper cutting, pen drawing and scrapbooking. It comes with a riser base and a rotary attachment for working on taller or curved items, such as tumblers. Here is how its pieces fit together and what to confirm before you commit.

One machine, several tools

The M1 Ultra uses swappable tool modules. The laser module engraves and cuts materials such as wood and acrylic. A blade module cuts vinyl, cardstock and similar sheets, which suits stickers, scrapbooking and custom T-shirt transfers. A pen module draws designs, lettering and cards. xTool also mentions an optional inkjet module, which the listing notes is not included.

Its Easy Swap design is claimed to change modules in about three seconds, which matters if a project uses more than one tool, such as cutting a shape and then engraving a detail on it.

What a 20W laser can do

A laser's wattage is a rough guide to how quickly and deeply it can work. xTool says the 20W module can cut through 10 mm wood and 8 mm acrylic in one pass, and describes it as twice as fast as its 10W option. Those are the brand's figures for particular materials and settings, and results vary with the material type, its density and the speed you choose. Generally, thicker or harder materials need slower speeds or more passes.

Riser base and rotary

The riser base lifts the machine, so taller items can fit under the laser. Paired with the RA2 Pro rotary attachment, which spins round objects, it lets the laser work on cylindrical or curved surfaces. xTool says the combination handles materials of varying height and curved surfaces. Check the machine's stated working height against the item you have in mind.

Software and positioning

The machine works with xTool's XCS software. xTool says it includes more than 6,000 projects, AI-generated images, custom design and vector editing, plus tutorials for beginners. Snapshot preview shows the material on screen so you can place a design on it, and pin-point positioning helps line things up precisely on irregular pieces.

Materials

xTool says the M1 Ultra works with over 1,000 materials, from soft to hard, thin to thick and flat to 3D curved. Typical uses include wood, cardstock, vinyl, fabric and leather. As with any laser, some materials should never be cut or engraved because they release harmful fumes; follow the manual's list of supported and unsafe materials.

Safety and setup

xTool describes the M1 Ultra as a Class 1 laser product with 20W (20,000 mW) output, designed for safe home use, and says it arrives ready to use with no installation. Class 1 refers to an enclosed design that limits exposure to the beam. Even so, laser machines call for ventilation or an exhaust method for fumes, a stable work area away from flammable items, and never leaving a running job unattended. Follow the manual and local rules.

Size

The listing gives dimensions of 25.6 x 21.3 x 31.9 inches (about 65 x 54 x 81 cm). Make sure you have a stable bench and room to open the lid, plus a place for venting.

What to check before you buy

  • Space and venting: a workspace with a window or exhaust route for fumes.
  • Modules: confirm which modules, the riser base and the rotary come in your kit, and remember the inkjet module is separate.
  • Material limits: check maximum thickness and height for your projects.
  • Computer: check the software requirements and whether you will connect by cable or wirelessly.
  • Consumables: blades, pens and materials are bought separately, and blades wear with use.
  • Safety: read the manual and keep a fire extinguisher or similar nearby, as laser guidance generally advises.

The short version

  • A 4-in-1 machine: 20W laser, vinyl cutter, pen drawing and scrapbooking.
  • xTool says it cuts 10 mm wood and 8 mm acrylic in one pass.
  • Swappable modules, with the riser base and RA2 Pro rotary for taller and curved items.
  • XCS software with 6,000+ projects and snapshot preview.
  • Class 1 laser design, according to xTool; the inkjet module is not included.
