The ELEGOO PHECDA is an open-frame laser engraver and cutter with a 20,000 mW (20W) output and a 400 x 400 mm work area. It is aimed at makers who want to engrave and cut wood, acrylic and thin metal marks for craft and DIY projects. Because it is a Class 4 laser, safety deserves as much attention as the specs.
What 20,000 mW means
Output power is the optical power of the laser beam, not the electrical power drawn from the wall. ELEGOO gives a focal spot of 0.06 x 0.06 mm in the feature list and 0.07 x 0.13 mm in the description, and says it can move at up to 25,000 mm/min. A small spot concentrates energy for fine detail, and more power generally allows deeper cuts or faster work. ELEGOO says the machine handles materials including wood, bamboo, kraft paper, stainless steel and aluminium, and up to 14 mm basswood boards. For metals, laser engraving normally means marking the surface rather than cutting.
Work area and objects
The 400 x 400 mm (15.75 x 15.75 inch) area suits larger projects or several small pieces at once. A height-adjustable laser head and adjustable risers let you work on objects of different heights. The largest cylinder the standard setup can engrave is 68.5 mm in diameter, and a larger one needs another set of risers. A rotary attachment and air assist are mentioned as separate purchases.
Smoke filtering and cooling
The laser head has a smoke exhaust filter and two cooling fans. According to ELEGOO, the fans run for one extra minute after engraving to extend their life. The filter cartridge has a detachable cover so it can be removed and replaced. A filter reduces smoke at the head but does not replace room ventilation, since engraving can produce fumes.
Magnetic shading plate and eye protection
A translucent magnetic shading plate blocks harmful UV light, lets you watch the spot, and helps collect smoke. Goggles are supplied. The listing gives the laser class as Class 4 and an FDA accession number of 2311025-000. Class 4 beams can injure eyes and skin, and may start fires, so always wear suitable eyewear, never leave a running machine unattended and keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Follow the manual and local rules.
Control and software
You can control the machine in three ways:
- a mobile app over the machine's own Wi-Fi network;
- a USB cable or TF card for transferring files;
- LightBurn and LaserGRBL software.
ELEGOO also describes real-time changes to speed and power while marking the perimeter and during engraving, plus a modular head with a focal positioning bar and a detachable window mirror.
Who it suits
It suits hobbyists and small workshops who want a larger bed than many compact lasers and are prepared to set up a safe workspace. Complete beginners should plan time to learn settings and safety.
What to check before you buy
- Space and ventilation: choose a stable surface and a place where fumes can be vented.
- Materials: only process materials the manufacturer and safety data say are suitable.
- Add-ons: air assist and the rotary attachment are sold separately.
- Software: confirm your computer works with LightBurn or LaserGRBL.
- Upkeep: plan to replace the filter and clean the window mirror.
- Rules: some insurers, landlords and workplaces restrict Class 4 lasers.
