The DEWENWILS DL-615 is a hand-wound reel for storing a heavy extension cord, with a power block of four outlets built into it. It tackles two common workshop annoyances: cords that end up in a tangled heap, and not having enough outlets where you need them. It is designed for garages, yards, warehouses and job sites.

How the reel works

The reel is an open design with a swivel round-grip crank handle. You insert the end of your own cord into the wheel and wind the rest onto it. A locking mechanism at the bottom stops the reel from turning, and the metal stand keeps it upright. DEWENWILS says the vertical design takes up little floor space. Check what is in the box, since the listing describes a reel for winding a cord onto.

Cord capacity

DEWENWILS says it holds up to 100 ft of 14/3 or 16/3 gauge cord, or 75 ft of 12/3 gauge. Thicker cord (a lower gauge number) carries more current over distance, so it takes up more room on the reel. The listing names 12/3, 14/3 and 16/3 as the suitable types, with the "3" meaning three conductors including a ground.

Four grounded outlets

The built-in block has four three-prong grounded outlets, spaced so bulky plugs shouldn't block their neighbours. It is rated for 15A at 125V, or 1,875W in total. That limit covers everything plugged in at once, so add up the wattage of your tools before connecting them. The rocker power switch lets you turn the block on and off.

Overload protection

A 15A circuit breaker is built in. If the combined current exceeds 15A, it cuts the supply, and pressing the button restores power. It protects against overload and short circuits, but it doesn't replace choosing a cord and tools that match. The reel is ETL listed, according to DEWENWILS.

Size and weight

It measures about 10.7 x 7.2 x 11.8 inches and weighs 3.5 lb. The grip handle makes it easy to carry between the garage and a work site.

Who it suits

It suits anyone who wants to keep a long cord tidy in a garage or workshop, or needs several outlets at the end of a run, such as for a yard project. It is meant for the cord gauges listed above.

What to check before you buy

  • Your cord: confirm its gauge and length fit the capacities above.
  • Load: total draw must stay under 15A and 1,875W.
  • Unwinding: most manuals advise fully unwinding a cord under heavy load, since a coiled cord can heat up; check the instructions.
  • Location: check the manual on whether the reel suits damp or outdoor locations.
  • Mounting: it stands on its own, so allow floor or bench space.
  • Codes: follow local electrical codes and the manual.
