The Creality Falcon 5W is a desktop laser engraver that arrives largely pre-assembled. Creality says it is ready to use in 5 to 10 minutes, and positions it for hobbyists who want to engrave and cut materials such as wood and acrylic. It has a large 500 x 500 mm working area.
Spot size and detail
A laser engraver's detail depends on how small it can focus its beam. Creality lists a compressed spot of 0.06 mm x 0.06 mm, which it says suits fine patterns on wood and metal with fewer burn marks. A finer spot generally means sharper lines and smaller text. Note that diode lasers of this class typically mark some metals, rather than cut them, and often need a coating or special spray. Check the manual for materials.
Speed and power
Creality gives a processing speed of up to 400 mm/s, which is the same as 24,000 mm/min. The product title also lists 10,000 mm/min and 72W; these figures refer to different things (movement speed and the machine's electrical power, typically), so read the manual. The "5W" in the name is the laser's optical output. Optical output sets how thick a material can be cut and how many passes are needed. At 5W, expect engraving to be the main job, with thin wood and acrylic as light cutting.
Work area and bed
The honeycomb panel supports a work area up to 500 x 500 mm (about 19.7 inches square). A honeycomb bed lets air flow underneath the material, which typically cuts back on scorching, and keeps the workpiece lifted. The machine measures about 24 x 18 x 3 inches in its listing.
Build
Creality lists anodised aluminium alloy construction, L-shaped silicone footpads and an 8 mm steel rail for smooth movement. A built-in levelling aid helps you check that the machine is placed flat.
Eye protection and safety
Creality says the module has an acrylic cover that filters 97% of UV light. Lasers are hazardous: follow the manual, wear the recommended eye protection, never leave it running unattended, ventilate the room and keep flammable material away.
Who it suits
It suits makers who want a ready-to-use machine for custom signs, gifts, coasters, small boards and detailed engraving, from beginners to experienced users, according to Creality.
What to check before you buy
- Materials: confirm that what you want to engrave or cut is supported at 5W.
- Space: you need a stable table of roughly 24 x 18 inches plus room around the work area.
- Ventilation: plan for fume extraction or an open window, since burning wood and plastics creates smoke.
- Software and computer: check the supported control software and connections in the manual.
- Eye protection and fire safety: keep a suitable extinguisher near.
