The X-Sense SWS0A41 is a water leak detection kit with four small sensors and one Wi-Fi base station. The sensors sit near places where leaks start, such as under sinks, behind washing machines or beside a water heater. When one detects water, the base station sounds an alarm and the app sends an alert to your phone.

How the alerts work

When a sensor detects water, a red light flashes on it. Only the base station sounds the alarm, at up to 100 dB, according to X-Sense. The listing points to the X-Sense SWS54 kit for anyone who wants both the sensor and the base station to sound. The app sends a notification as well, so you can hear about a leak while away from home.

Where the sensors detect

Each sensor has two probes on top and four on the bottom. X-Sense says this lets it sense water as shallow as 0.4 mm, as well as drips from above. In practice, a flat sensor placed on the floor reacts to a thin film of water rather than waiting for a puddle.

Slim shape

Each unit is 3 inches (77 mm) across and 0.7 inch (17 mm) thick. A slim body fits behind appliances and in tight gaps where a bulky sensor wouldn't.

Range, battery and weatherproofing

X-Sense states a wireless range of up to 1,700 ft (500 m) in open areas between the sensor and the base station. Walls and floors reduce that distance. The sensors have an IP67 protection class, meaning they are dust-tight and can withstand temporary immersion, which suits damp spots near dishwashers or water heaters. The batteries last up to 3 years, and X-Sense says replacing them extends the sensor's life to 5 years.

The app

In the X-Sense Home Security App you can change the base station's alarm volume, mute an alarm, view alarm history, test the device, receive low-battery alerts and share the sensors with others. "Remind Me Later" mutes alerts for 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 2 hours, 6 hours or 12 hours.

One note from the brand matters for setup: the base station works only with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, not 5 GHz.

Who it suits

It suits homeowners and renters who want early warning for basements, laundry rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, garages or wine cellars, and anyone away from home regularly. The listing names windows, sinks, pipes and restrooms among the places to use it.

What to check before you buy

  • Wi-Fi band: confirm your router offers a 2.4 GHz network.
  • Placement: list the spots you want covered and check four sensors are enough.
  • Alarm type: only the base station sounds, so consider where it will be heard.
  • Distance: check walls and floors between sensors and the base station.
  • Batteries: note the battery type and replacement schedule in the manual.
  • Limits: a leak sensor alerts you but doesn't stop the water, so know where your shut-off valve is.
