The AOSU V8S1AX11 is a 5MP video doorbell that runs on a built-in rechargeable battery or can be wired in. It comes with a HomeBase hub that stores recordings locally. Here is what the specs mean and what to check before installing one.
5MP picture and wide view
AOSU says the 5MP resolution is a 40% improvement over 2K and that the lens uses seven pieces of optical glass for sharp footage in low light or bright conditions. The field of view is 166°. That wide angle is meant to show a person from head to toe and a package on the ground, so less is outside the frame. Wide lenses can create some distortion at the edges, which is common.
How the sensing works
The doorbell combines radar and PIR (passive infrared) motion sensors with human detection. PIR picks up the heat of moving bodies, radar measures movement at distance, and software then judges whether the subject is a person or an animal. AOSU says this lets it tell near and far objects' tracks apart. As with any motion system, you will probably still adjust sensitivity and zones to suit your doorstep.
HomeBase and local storage
The HomeBase hub has 8 GB of built-in memory. Video is sent to it over WiFi, and AOSU says it holds up to 60 days of loop recording, with the oldest clips overwritten first. Storing footage on a local hub means clips do not depend on an online storage plan. The hub needs a power outlet and a good WiFi link to the doorbell.
Battery life
The built-in rechargeable battery is rated by AOSU at up to 180 days per charge, helped by a low-power wireless connection that it says uses 58% less power. Battery life in practice depends on how many motion events there are, the temperature and the video settings. Wired power is also an option if you have existing doorbell wiring.
Connectivity and smart home
The doorbell supports 2.4 and 5 GHz WiFi and works with Alexa and Google Assistant. Check the exact features each assistant offers, such as live view on a smart display.
What to check before you buy
- WiFi coverage: make sure the signal reaches your front door and the HomeBase location.
- Power choice: decide between battery and wired power, and check your doorbell transformer's voltage if wiring.
- Mounting: confirm the doorframe, door and angle allow the wide view you want.
- Chime: check how you will hear the doorbell indoors.
- Privacy: look at local rules on recording audio and video of public areas and neighbours.
- App and storage: check how you view clips, and what happens to them once the 8 GB is full.
