The Blackview BV4800 is an unlocked rugged smartphone built to cope with water, dust, drops and work gloves. It runs Android 13, has a 6.56-inch screen and a 5180mAh battery, and supports 4G on a range of GSM carriers. Here is what its main specs mean and what to check before choosing it.

What the rugged certifications mean

Blackview lists IP68 and IP69K sealing. IP68 generally means the phone is dust-tight and can survive immersion in water; the brand says the BV4800 handles depths of up to 1.5 m for 30 minutes. IP69K is a stricter standard that is associated with resistance to high-pressure, high-temperature water spray. The phone also carries a MIL-STD-810H drop-proof certification, a US military test standard for durability, and Blackview says it can withstand a 5 m drop to the ground. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.

These standards describe lab conditions, and a phone's seals can age, so follow the manual on ports, covers and cleaning.

Screen and glove mode

The display is 6.56 inches with a 720 x 1612 resolution, up to 450 nits of brightness and a screen-to-body ratio of up to 83%. It supports 10-point touch. At this resolution the picture is functional rather than razor-sharp, which is typical for rugged phones. Glove mode adjusts touch sensitivity so the screen responds while you wear gloves, which is the main reason many people choose this type of phone for outdoor or workshop use. Blackview also notes that font and screen size can be adjusted, which it says is convenient for older users.

Software and performance

The phone ships with Android 13 and Blackview's Doke OS 3.1, which adds features such as call recording and exercise tracking. It has a 2.0GHz processor and 4GB of RAM, made up of 2GB physical and 2GB virtual RAM, with 32GB of storage. A dedicated micro SD slot supports cards up to 2TB, which is how most buyers would expand storage. Expect basic everyday tasks rather than demanding games.

Battery and charging others

The 5180mAh battery is the main source of its endurance, and Blackview says it lasts through the day or longer. USB OTG support means the phone can act as a small power bank for charging other devices through a cable.

Camera and connections

The rear camera is 13MP, with modes including panorama, underwater, night and HDR, and phase-detection autofocus. The front camera is 5MP. There are three card slots: two nano SIMs plus a micro SD (cards not included). Face ID unlock and GPS with BeiDou, GLONASS and Galileo are also listed.

Network compatibility

This matters more than anything else on this page. Blackview says the phone supports 4G on GSM carriers, and it names carriers including T-Mobile and several Canadian ones. It warns that it is not compatible with CDMA carriers such as AT&T, Verizon and others it names. The listed bands are 2G GSM B2/B3/B5/B8, 3G WCDMA B2/B4/B5 and 4G FDD B2/B3/B4/B5/B7/B12/B13/B17/B26/B66.

Who it suits

It suits people who work or play outdoors, such as builders, hikers, warehouse and farm workers, or anyone who wants a phone they worry less about. It is less suited to people who want a high-resolution display or the speed of a flagship phone.

What to check before you buy

  • Carrier: confirm your provider is GSM-based and that the bands above cover the ones it uses.
  • SIM and storage: SIM and micro SD cards aren't included.
  • Size and weight: rugged phones are typically thicker and heavier than ordinary ones, so check a pocket or holster will fit it.
  • Software updates: ask the maker how long it will provide updates.
  • Warranty: Blackview's seller says the phone has a 2-year guarantee; check the terms.
