The Renogy Rover 20A is a charge controller for off-grid solar systems. It sits between the solar panels and the battery, and it controls how much current reaches the battery so that the panels do not overcharge it. Renogy also says it guards the battery against over-discharge from the loads.

What MPPT means

MPPT stands for Maximum Power Point Tracking. A solar panel's best operating voltage shifts with light and temperature, and an MPPT controller keeps adjusting to stay near that point, then converts the extra voltage into charging current. Renogy quotes tracking efficiency of up to 99% and peak conversion efficiency of 98%, and says this helps in cloudy conditions, when the panel's output fluctuates through the day.

12V and 24V

For non-lithium batteries the controller detects whether the system is 12V or 24V automatically. An LCD screen and several LED indicators show charging and battery information, adjustable parameters and error codes. The die-cast aluminium body is designed for heat dissipation.

Charging stages and battery types

The controller supports gel, sealed and flooded lead-acid batteries, and lithium. Lead-acid charging has four stages: bulk, absorption, float and equalization. Lithium charging has two stages, bulk and absorption, and the controller includes a lithium reactivation feature. Renogy says this process is tuned to extend battery life. You should set the battery type correctly, because the charging profile depends on it.

Protections

Renogy lists self-diagnostic protection against reverse polarity, battery overcharging, over-discharging, overload, short circuit and reverse current. These are electrical products, so follow the manual and local electrical codes for wiring, fusing and cable sizing.

Load terminals

Optional load terminals let you connect DC appliances directly to the controller, monitor consumption, and set timer controls from the controller itself.

Remote monitoring

The RS232 port connects to the Renogy BT-1 Bluetooth module, which is sold separately and which Renogy recommends. With it, you can follow panel status and production in the DC Home app and Renogy ONE M1.

Size and weight

The controller measures about 5.9 x 8.3 x 2.3 inches and weighs 1.5 lb (about 0.7 kg).

Who it suits

It suits RVs, cabins, boats, sheds and other small off-grid systems that use 12V or 24V batteries and solar panels, and need a controller with a clear display.

What to check before you buy

  • System voltage and current: confirm your panel array's voltage and current fit within the controller's 20A limit and input limits in the manual.
  • Battery type: check your battery is among the supported chemistries and which settings it needs.
  • Wiring: plan cable size, fuses and breakers as the manual describes.
  • Monitoring: decide whether you want the Bluetooth module, which is a separate purchase.
  • Mounting: allow space for airflow and cabling.

The short version

  • A 20A MPPT solar charge controller for 12V and 24V systems.
  • Tracking efficiency of up to 99% and peak conversion efficiency of 98%, per Renogy.
  • Four-stage lead-acid charging and two-stage lithium charging.
  • LCD and LED display, load terminals and RS232 port for the BT-1 module.
  • Protections against reverse polarity, overcharge, overload and short circuit.
