The Waterdrop WD-CTF-01 is a faucet-mounted water filter that attaches to a standard kitchen tap and filters water as it flows through. It needs no drilling or plumbing work, which makes it a candidate for rentals and RVs as well as homes. Here is what the specs mean, and the one thing to check first: whether your faucet is compatible.
Faucet compatibility comes first
Waterdrop states that this filter fits standard faucets only. It is not compatible with pull-out, handheld, spray-style or sensor-activated faucets. The brand points to the product images for compatibility details and invites you to send a photo of your faucet if you're unsure. Because it threads onto the spout, the shape and thread of your tap decide whether it will fit.
Installation
Waterdrop says the unit comes with the hardware needed, including a wrench and adapters, and that it works with most standard kitchen taps. A switch lets you move between tap water and filtered water, which is handy because filtered water is typically only needed for drinking and cooking. The brand asks you to keep the wrench for later, when you replace the filter. Operating conditions are 41 to 100°F (5 to 38°C) and a water pressure of 15 to 100 psi (100 to 689 kPa).
Five stages of filtration
The system uses a 5-stage process. Waterdrop says it reduces colloids, sediment and up to 99% of chlorine, and also helps reduce heavy metals, hydrogen sulfide and fluoride, citing third-party laboratory testing. The listing carries NSF/ANSI 42 certification, which in general covers the reduction of aesthetic contaminants such as chlorine, affecting taste and odour. Check the product's certification documents for exactly what is covered.
It does not reduce TDS
Waterdrop is upfront that this filter does not reduce TDS (total dissolved solids). It says the water may keep minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium, which can mean a naturally higher TDS reading. If you want a filter that lowers TDS, this is not that type of product.
Flow rate and filter life
The brand quotes a flow rate of up to 1.6 gallons per minute. Filter life is rated at up to 12 months or 8,000 gallons on municipal tap water. Waterdrop notes that actual performance varies with your water quality, so the filter may need replacing sooner or later. The housing is 304 stainless steel with a brushed finish and is described as BPA-free.
Size and weight
It measures about 4.9 x 3.5 x 12.5 inches (12.4 x 8.9 x 31.8 cm) and weighs 4.1 lb (about 1.9 kg). It hangs from the faucet, so check that your tap and sink area have room for a filter of this size.
Who it suits
It suits renters, people who can't change their plumbing, and RV owners who want filtered drinking water at a standard tap.
What to check before you buy
- Faucet type: confirm that your tap is standard and not pull-out, spray-style or sensor-activated.
- Clearance: make sure there's space under any cabinet or shelf for the height of the unit.
- Water source: the 8,000-gallon figure refers to municipal tap water.
- TDS: this filter doesn't lower it, so check that this suits what you want.
- Replacement: note the filter model number and keep the wrench.
- Temperature: it's rated for cold water within 41 to 100°F, so check the manual before using it with hot water.
