The Dreo countertop reverse osmosis (RO) water filter is a plug-in unit that filters tap water without any plumbing work. You fill it, and it produces filtered water into a pitcher. It suits kitchens, living rooms, offices and RVs where an under-sink system is not an option.
How reverse osmosis works
Reverse osmosis pushes water through a very fine membrane that holds back dissolved solids and many other substances. The rejected water, carrying what the membrane held back, goes to a drain. Dreo says its system uses seven filtration stages and removes up to 1,000 contaminants by 99.99%, which is the brand's claim. Look at the manual and any test documentation for exactly what is covered. The listing also mentions an activated carbon stage, which typically helps with taste and odour, and Dreo says essential minerals remain in the water.
Setup
No installation is needed. Dreo says you plug it in and flush twice, then it's ready. That makes it practical for renters and for spaces without plumbing access, though you'll fill the tank by hand, so allow counter space near a tap.
Pure-to-drain ratio
All RO systems send some water to drain. This one is rated at 3:1 pure to drain, meaning that for every 3 parts of filtered water it sends 1 part to drain, which Dreo describes as reducing waste. Many traditional under-sink systems have a lower ratio, though designs vary.
Display, TDS and filter life
An LED screen controls dispensing and shows live TDS (total dissolved solids), a rough measure of how much dissolved material is in the water. It also tracks filter life so you know when to replace filters. Auto flushing and a child lock are among the other features. TDS readings are a useful indicator but do not identify specific substances.
Two pitchers and filter capacity
The listing describes dual portable BPA-free pitchers: carry one to another room, the office or an RV while the standby one refills quietly. Dreo says that one RO filter and two PPC filters (one included) can purify up to 1,050 gallons (about 4,000 litres), equal to 8,000 plastic bottles. The real life of the filters depends on your water quality and use, so check the manual for the schedule.
Size
The unit measures about 9.1 x 15.9 x 13.1 inches (23 x 40 x 33 cm) and weighs 14.6 lb (about 6.6 kg), so it needs a firm, level counter and a nearby outlet.
Who it suits
It suits households that want filtered drinking water without a plumber, renters, small offices, and anyone who currently buys bottled water. It's less suited to those who need large volumes at once, since the tank and pitcher are limited in size.
What to check before you buy
- Counter space: measure the width, depth and height, including the room needed to lift the lid and pitchers.
- Your tap water: if your supply has a particular concern, check the product's test documentation or your local water report.
- Filter replacements: find out how often filters need replacing and how they're ordered.
- Drain water: plan where the rejected water goes, and what the manual says about it.
- Power: it needs an outlet nearby.
- Cleaning: follow the manual for cleaning the tank and pitchers.
