The Frizzlife MP99 is a compact under-sink filter that connects to the cold water line and supplies filtered water through its own stainless steel faucet. It is aimed at drinking and cooking water, and it is designed to be installed and serviced without tools or plumbing changes. Here is what the specs mean.

Two-stage, 0.5 micron filtration

Frizzlife describes the MP99's cartridge as a two-stage compound filter with 0.5 micron precision. Compound filters typically combine a sediment layer, which catches particles, with carbon, which reduces chlorine, taste and odour. The brand says the system is third-party tested to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead reduction, and the listing also shows NSF/ANSI 42. It also says the filter retains naturally occurring minerals. Check the certification documents for the exact claims.

Note that the system is designed for cold water use only.

The dedicated faucet

A stainless steel drinking-water faucet is supplied and works with most sinks. Using a separate tap means filtered water is drawn only when you want it for drinking, kettles and cooking, and your main tap is unaffected. You will need a hole for it in the sink or countertop.

Flow rate

Frizzlife rates the flow at up to 1.5 gallons per minute at 80 psi and says a typical glass fills in about five seconds. That is a figure under set test conditions, and flow at home typically depends on your supply pressure.

Installation and cartridge changes

The twist-in design is described as taking under three minutes to install or to change a cartridge. The filter cap has a built-in shut-off valve, so Frizzlife says you do not need to turn off the water supply when swapping the cartridge. The kit includes a 3/8-inch brass inlet adapter valve, an installation wrench, other accessories and an installation guide.

Only the inner cartridge is replaced, and the housing is reused, which cuts down on plastic waste. Frizzlife rates each cartridge for up to two years, but suggests replacing it after six to eight months for better filtration.

Beyond the kitchen sink

The brand says the MP99 can also feed compatible countertop setups, RVs, refrigerators and ice makers and other water lines. The unit measures about 5.5 x 5.5 x 13.4 inches (14 x 14 x 34 cm) and weighs 4.4 lb (2 kg).

Who it suits

It suits households that want better-tasting drinking water and lead reduction at the tap without a large system, and renters or owners who want a tool-free install. If you want dissolved solids reduced as well, a different technology such as reverse osmosis is needed.

What to check before you buy

  • Space: confirm about 13.4 inches of height and 5.5 inches of width under the sink.
  • Faucet hole: check for a free hole or a way to add one.
  • Cold water only: connect to the cold supply.
  • Water line: the 3/8-inch inlet adapter must suit your supply valve.
  • Certified claims: read the NSF/ANSI 53 and 42 claims against your own concern.
  • Upkeep: note the replacement schedule and where to find cartridges.
