The Roborock Q8 Max is a robot vacuum that can also mop. It maps your home with a laser sensor, avoids obstacles and is controlled from an app. It aims to take over routine floor cleaning, including pet hair, so you only have to empty the bin and refill the water tank. It measures 13.9 x 13.8 x 3.8 inches (about 35 x 35 x 9.7 cm) and weighs 8.8 lb (about 4 kg).

What 5,500 Pa suction means

Pascals (Pa) measure suction pressure. Roborock rates the Q8 Max's HyperForce suction at 5,500 Pa and says it lifts dirt and pet hair from different floor types. Suction figures are useful for comparing machines from the same brand, but real results also depend on the brush, the floor and how well the machine's airflow is sealed.

The DuoRoller brush

The main brush is the DuoRoller, a pair of rubber rollers. Roborock says this reduces hair tangles, particularly on carpet, and raises hair pickup by 20% compared with its earlier design. Rubber brushes are generally easier to clean than bristle brushes, where long hair wraps around the bristles. You will still need to clear hair from the brush regularly.

Vacuum and mop together

The Q8 Max can vacuum and mop in the same pass to pick up fine dust that vacuuming alone can leave. There are 30 water-flow levels, and the design is detachable, so you can mop, vacuum or do both. Robot mops are best for light, regular upkeep of hard floors rather than scrubbing sticky spills. Keep the mop away from carpet and rugs, and check the manual on how the machine handles them.

LiDAR navigation and mapping

PreciSense LiDAR uses a spinning laser to measure distances and build a detailed map, which Roborock says lets the robot choose an efficient route. The app shows a 3D map where you can add furniture and select the floor material in each room. Quick mapping is said to create the first map up to six times faster, and a quick cleaning route can clean 30% faster when selected.

Multi-level mapping recognises different floors automatically. Roborock says you only need to set the robot down on the floor, with no extra docks, and it supports up to four levels.

Obstacle avoidance and No-Go Zones

Obstacle avoidance detects objects on the floor, so you don't have to clear everything first. It also suggests No-Go Zones for stairs and places where a robot could get stuck. You can draw your own zones in the app. Very small items such as cables and socks can still be a problem for any robot vacuum, so a tidy floor helps.

The app

The Roborock app controls cleaning, schedules, maps and water flow. Check the app's current feature list and supported phones.

What to check before you buy

  • Floors: think about the mix of hard floor, carpet and rugs, and where mopping should be avoided.
  • Clearance: measure furniture gaps and thresholds against the 3.8-inch height.
  • Pets: consider hair volume and how often you will clean the brush and bin.
  • Wi-Fi: confirm that your network and phone work with the app.
  • Upkeep: brushes, filters and mop pads wear out; check that replacements are available.
  • Stairs and levels: if you have several floors, check how maps are stored and the limit of four.
