The LEVOIT LV-H132 is a small tower air purifier for bedrooms, offices and nurseries. It pulls room air through a three-layer filter to catch dust, pollen, smoke particles and odours, and it is built to run quietly enough to leave on overnight. The sections below explain what the main features mean and what to check.

How the 3-layer filter works

LEVOIT describes a three-layer system: a fine preliminary filter, an efficient filter and an activated carbon filter. In general, a pre-filter catches larger particles such as hair and visible dust, which helps protect the main filter. The efficient (HEPA-type) filter traps fine airborne particles such as pollen and dust. The activated carbon layer is what typically handles odours and some gases, since carbon adsorbs those molecules. Over time all three layers load up, so the filter needs replacing. LEVOIT recommends its own replacement filter, model LV-H132-RF, and says off-brand filters may not fit or filter as well.

What AHAM VERIFIDE means

AHAM is the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, an ANSI-accredited body. LEVOIT says units with the AHAM VERIFIDE seal have been independently tested for air-cleaning performance, safety and energy efficiency. The seal gives a standard way of comparing a purifier's rated clean air delivery rate (CADR) and suggested room size, so check the manual or packaging for those figures rather than relying on a general claim.

Certifications

LEVOIT lists ETL, FCC and CARB certification. CARB is California's air resources board, which sets limits on ozone emissions from air cleaners. The listed power supply is 120V/60Hz, intended for the United States and Canada. As with any electrical appliance, follow the manual and local codes.

Noise and night light

LEVOIT says noise can be as low as 28 dB, which it describes as quiet enough to run through the night. Decibel figures are measured on the lowest fan setting, so expect more sound at higher speeds. The purifier has an optional night light with two brightness settings, and it can be switched off entirely for a dark bedroom.

Size and placement

The unit is about 7.9 x 7.9 x 12.6 inches (20 x 20 x 32 cm) and weighs 6.0 lb (about 2.7 kg), making it easy to move between rooms. Most purifiers work best with some clearance on all sides, and a smaller unit is designed for a limited room size, such as a bedroom or study.

Who it suits

It suits bedrooms, offices, nurseries and small living spaces where a compact, quiet unit is wanted. Larger open-plan rooms usually need a higher-capacity model.

What to check before you buy

  • Room size: compare the rated coverage with your room.
  • Replacement filters: check the filter model (LV-H132-RF) and how often the maker suggests replacing it.
  • Noise: decide whether the lowest setting is quiet enough for your bedroom.
  • Placement: leave clearance around the unit and keep it away from walls and curtains.
  • Light: if you sleep with the room fully dark, check that the light can be turned off completely.
  • Power: it is rated for 120V, so check it suits your region.
