The KNKA AP2000WF is a room air purifier built around a True HEPA filter, with an air quality sensor, app control and a sleep mode. It is meant for people who want to filter dust, pet hair and pollen from the air in a bedroom, living room or office, and who like to see what the machine is doing. It measures 15.7 x 6.1 x 12.0 inches (about 40 x 15 x 30 cm) and weighs 5.9 lb (about 2.7 kg).

What True HEPA filtration means

A True HEPA filter is the standard type used in home air purifiers for fine particles. In general, the standard refers to capturing at least 99.97% of particles of 0.3 microns, a size that is among the hardest for a filter to catch. KNKA says the AP2000WF captures particles of that size, including pet hair, smoke particles, PM2.5, pollen and larger dust. The brand also says it needs only one filter rather than a multi-layer set.

A HEPA filter removes particles, not gases. Odours can be reduced by some filters that include carbon, but check the filter's description if smells are your main concern.

Coverage area and room size

KNKA gives a coverage area of up to 1,740 square feet (about 160 m²) and suggests bedrooms, living rooms, offices, dorms, basements, classrooms and kitchens. Coverage figures like this are usually stated for a purifier running at full speed and can assume a set number of air changes per hour. In a smaller room the machine can run at a lower speed, which is usually quieter. In a very large open space, expect less frequent air changes than the number suggests.

The air quality sensor and automatic mode

An infrared PM2.5 sensor monitors the air in real time and shows the result on the display. In automatic mode, KNKA says the screen changes colour, to yellow or red, when the air becomes cloudier, and the fan speeds up to clean it faster. When the air improves, the fan can slow down again. That makes automatic mode a sensible default if you are unsure which fan speed to pick.

Sleep mode and quiet running

In sleep mode the fan runs at low speed, and KNKA rates the noise at under 15 dB. A single press of the light-off button turns off the display lights. An aroma pad lets you add two or three drops of your own essential oil; the oil is not included. Check the manual on what oils the pad is suited to.

Modes, timer, app and child lock

There are five working modes: Sleep, Auto, and three fan speeds (1F, 2F, 3F). The timer offers 2, 5 or 8 hours, which suits running it overnight or while you are out. A child lock locks the buttons against accidental touches from babies or pets.

For remote use, the purifier works with the "Smart Life" app, which lets you change settings and check air quality and filter life from your phone. KNKA notes that it supports only 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks, which matters if your router combines bands or is set to 5GHz only.

Filter life and certifications

A filter-replacement reminder lights up when the filter reaches the end of its life, and the display or app shows remaining filter life. KNKA recommends replacing the filter every three to six months and using its own replacement filters. KNKA lists CARB, DOE, FCC, CA65, CE and RoHS certifications and an ETL listing, and says the unit produces no trace ozone. As with any electrical appliance, follow the manual for placement and power connection.

What to check before you buy

  • Room size: compare the coverage figure with your room, and remember it is a maximum.
  • Wi-Fi: the app needs a 2.4GHz network.
  • Filter upkeep: check how often you are willing to replace the filter, and that the replacement is available where you live.
  • Placement: leave clear space around the unit so air can move freely, as the manual describes.
  • Noise: consider whether the sleep-mode level suits a bedroom, and whether the display lights bother you at night.
  • Needs: a HEPA filter handles particles, so confirm it fits what you want to address.
