The KNKA APH4000 is an air purifier that draws air in through filters at both the front and the back, then sends it out through vents on the sides. It is AHAM Verifide, with a smoke, dust and PM2.5 CADR of 226 CFM, and it adds PET, ECO and Sleep modes plus a real-time air quality display. Here is what its numbers mean for choosing the right room.
What CADR and AHAM Verifide mean
CADR, or clean air delivery rate, is the volume of filtered air a purifier delivers per minute for a given type of particle. The APH4000 is listed at 226 CFM (384 m³/h) for smoke, dust and PM2.5, and 244 CFM (415 m³/h) for pollen.
AHAM Verifide is the verification programme run by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, in which CADR claims are checked by an independent lab. A common rule of thumb pairs a CADR with a room of about one and a half times that figure in square feet, which puts 226 CFM at roughly 340 sq ft, in line with KNKA's 350 sq ft figure.
Room size and air changes
KNKA's own table assumes 8 ft ceilings. In a 350 sq ft room (about 33 m²), it gives 4.8 air changes per hour, meaning the full volume of air passes through the filters every 12.5 minutes. The larger the room, the fewer the changes: two per hour in 847 sq ft, and one per hour in up to 1,695 sq ft.
The headline "up to 1,695 sq ft" is therefore the room size for a single air change per hour. For a bedroom or living room, the 350 sq ft figure is the more useful one. Rooms with higher ceilings get fewer air changes than the table shows.
Two filters, three stages
There are two filter cartridges, one at the front and one at the back, and each has three stages. A washable pre-filter catches larger particles such as pet hair, dust and lint. A high-efficiency filter handles fine particles and pollen. An activated carbon layer adsorbs odours and smoke smells.
KNKA advises replacing the filters every three to six months, and a filter indicator shows when it's time. Remove the plastic wrapping from new filters before fitting them, and rinse the pre-filter between changes to keep airflow up.
Modes and noise
PET mode raises the airflow for pet hair, dander and odours; KNKA says it refreshes the air in about 30 minutes. ECO mode puts the purifier on standby when the air is clean and restarts it automatically when the sensor detects pollution. Sleep mode runs as low as 22 to 24 dB, and its display light fades after 10 seconds. There is also an Auto mode and four manual fan speeds. As with any purifier, the higher speeds are noticeably louder than sleep mode.
The air quality display
A built-in sensor measures PM2.5 and shows the result with coloured lights: green for excellent, then blue, yellow and red for severe. That makes it easy to see when cooking, dusting or an open window changes the air.
Who it suits
It suits bedrooms, living rooms and home offices of around 350 sq ft, and homes with pets where hair and odours are a regular concern. It can also run in larger open-plan spaces, with fewer air changes per hour.
