The DREO DR-HSH020 is a compact 1500W space heater for a desk, a table or the floor, with a head that tilts by hand to aim warm air from head to toe. It is made to warm the space around one person, such as a home office or a reading spot, rather than a whole house. This overview explains its listed features and what to check for your own space.
What 1500 W means
1500 W is the usual maximum for a plug-in heater on a standard North American 120 V outlet. At full power it draws about 12.5 amps, a large share of a typical 15-amp household circuit, so it is best not to run other high-power appliances on the same circuit at the same time. In heating terms, 1500 W is about 5,100 BTU per hour. Electric resistance heaters turn nearly all the electricity they use into heat; what differs between models is how they direct and control it. DREO says this one delivers warm air in about two seconds.
Tilt from 0 to 60 degrees
You tilt the head by hand to 0, 20, 40 or 60 degrees. On the floor, tilted up, it can send warm air towards your legs and upper body while you sit; level on a table, it warms at desk height. It measures 9.6 x 5.7 x 10.1 inches (about 24 x 14.5 x 26 cm) and weighs 3.5 lb (1.6 kg), so it is easy to carry from room to room.
Thermostat range and settings
A thermal sensor holds the temperature you set, anywhere from 41 to 95°F (5 to 35°C), in 1°F steps. A thermostat lets a heater hold a set point instead of running flat out the whole time. There are three heat settings and three fan settings, a 12-hour timer, and both a touch panel and a remote control.
Noise
A brushless DC motor and a winglet fan design reduce turbulence, and DREO lists the heater as quiet as 34 dB. "As quiet as" refers to the quietest setting; higher fan and heat settings will be louder. For a desk or a reading spot, the lower settings are usually where noise matters most.
Listed protections and certification
DREO lists four protective features:
- tip-over protection, which is designed to switch the heater off if it falls over;
- overheat protection, which is designed to shut it off if it gets too hot inside;
- V-0 flame-retardant materials (V-0 is a class in the UL 94 flammability test for plastics);
- a safety plug.
DREO states that all of these are certified by ETL, meaning tested by Intertek, a nationally recognised testing laboratory. Whatever features a heater has, the standard advice is the same: follow the manual and local codes, plug it directly into a wall outlet rather than an extension cord or power bar unless the manual says otherwise, keep it well clear of curtains, bedding, paper and furniture, and switch it off when you leave the room.
Who it suits
It suits an office desk or a spot by the sofa, where one person wants targeted warmth that can be tilted towards cold feet or hands.
What to check before you buy
- Outlet and circuit: plan to plug it straight into a wall outlet, and check what else runs on that circuit.
- Clearance: make sure there is room around it as the manual specifies, away from fabrics and paper.
- Footprint: about 9.6 x 5.7 inches on a desk or the floor.
- Controls: touch panel, remote and 12-hour timer; check that they cover how you plan to use it.
- The manual and local codes: follow both for placement and use.
