The Dreo DR-HSH002 is a portable electric tower heater that uses ceramic PTC heating elements. It is designed to warm a bedroom, office or living room, and it adds oscillation, a thermostat and a remote. This page covers what its specs mean and what to check for your own space.

How ceramic PTC heating works

PTC stands for positive temperature coefficient. A PTC ceramic element's electrical resistance rises as it heats, which naturally limits how hot the element can get. This is a common design in small heaters, and it generally warms up quickly. Dreo lists three adjustable modes across a 700-1500W range, with the top setting matching the maximum a typical 120-volt household outlet circuit is designed to supply to a single appliance.

Dreo says the heater covers up to 250 square feet (about 23 square metres). Treat that as a guide: insulation, ceiling height and outside temperature all change how a room actually feels.

Oscillation and airflow

The heater swings through a 70° arc automatically to spread warm air more evenly than a fixed heater, which would otherwise warm one spot. A DC motor drives the fan, which Dreo says keeps fan noise low enough for sleeping. DC fan motors are typically quieter and more finely controllable than basic AC ones.

Thermostat and ECO mode

You can set a target temperature from 41°F to 95°F (5°C to 35°C) in 1°F steps. In ECO mode, Dreo says the heater adjusts its power to match real-time room conditions rather than just switching on and off at full output. A remote control handles settings from across the room, and a hidden handle makes it easy to carry.

Timer and listed safety features

There is a 1-12 hour timer and a 24-hour auto shut-off. Dreo lists V0 flame-retardant material, overheat protection and tip-over protection, and says the heater is ETL certified. ETL is a product-safety certification mark from a recognised testing laboratory.

As with any heater, follow the manual and local codes. Keep it on a flat surface, well clear of curtains, bedding and furniture, and plug it directly into a wall outlet rather than an extension cord or power strip, as manufacturers typically advise.

Size and weight

The heater measures 6.1 x 6.1 x 16.0 inches (about 15.5 x 15.5 x 40.6 cm) and weighs 5.1 lb (about 2.3 kg), so it is easy to move between rooms.

Who it suits

It suits people who want a small, quiet heater for a bedroom or home office, with timer and thermostat control instead of a simple on/off switch. It is a supplementary heater, not a replacement for central heating in a large or poorly insulated space.

What to check before you buy

  • Room size: compare the stated 250 square feet with your room, ceiling height and insulation.
  • Power: a 1500W appliance draws about 12.5 amps at 120 volts, so avoid sharing a circuit with other high-power devices.
  • Placement: confirm there is a clear, flat spot with space around it.
  • Controls: check that you are comfortable with the remote and the timer behaviour.
  • Upkeep: check the manual on cleaning dust from the grille.
  • Local rules: some rentals and workplaces have rules on portable heaters.
