The DREO 539 (model DR-HAP009) is a compact HEPA air purifier for bedrooms, nurseries, home offices and larger living spaces. It pairs a 3-in-1 filter with a PM2.5 sensor that adjusts the fan to the air in the room. Its headline number, an AHAM Verified clean air delivery rate, makes it easier than usual to judge which room size it fits.
What the AHAM Verified CADR means
CADR (clean air delivery rate) is the volume of filtered air a purifier delivers, measured in cubic feet per minute under a standard test. AHAM Verified means the figure was independently tested under the programme run by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, rather than simply claimed by the brand.
The DREO 539 is AHAM Verified at 158 CFM (about 270 m³/h). DREO turns that into two room sizes:
- 245 sq ft (about 23 m²): the air is cleaned every 12.4 minutes, or 4.8 air changes per hour (ACH).
- 1,176 sq ft (about 109 m²): the coverage at one air change per hour.
The difference matters. One air change per hour is a slow, light cleaning rate. AHAM's usual room-size guidance works out to about 4.8 changes per hour, which is where the 245 sq ft figure comes from. If you want the air cleaned quickly, for example during wildfire smoke or pollen season, size by the smaller number.
The 3-in-1 filter
The filter combines three layers in one cartridge:
- a pre-filter that catches larger particles such as hair and lint;
- a high-efficiency layer for fine particles, including PM2.5, pollen, dust and smoke;
- an activated carbon layer that helps reduce household odours.
PM2.5 means particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. Activated carbon works differently from the particle layers: it traps odour molecules on its surface, and like any carbon layer, it fills up over time. A transparent window lets you check the filter's condition without opening the unit.
Sensor, display and modes
A PM2.5 sensor monitors particles in real time. The screen shows an air-quality reading from 1 to 999, and a four-colour light (blue, green, orange and red) shows the level at a glance.
There are four modes:
- Auto adjusts the fan speed to the sensor's readings.
- Turbo runs at full power when you want faster cleaning, for instance with wildfire smoke, pet dander or pollen.
- Normal gives four manual fan speeds.
- Sleep turns off the display lights; any button press wakes them.
Noise and energy use
A brushless DC (BLDC) motor, a bottom air inlet and a spiral intake grille are designed to keep noise down. Brushless motors are typically quieter and more efficient than older brushed designs. The DREO 539 is ENERGY STAR certified and, according to DREO, uses about 162 kWh a year.
Size and placement
At about 9.4 x 9.4 x 15.4 inches (24 x 24 x 39 cm) and 6.9 lb (3.1 kg), it's small enough for a bedside or the corner of a desk. Air enters through a 360° intake at the bottom, and purifiers generally work better with a little open space around them, away from curtains and furniture that would block the airflow.
What to check before you buy
- Room size: compare your room with the 245 sq ft figure for regular cleaning, not just the 1,176 sq ft maximum.
- Replacement filters: check how often DREO suggests changing the 3-in-1 filter and that genuine filters are easy to find.
- Noise: look up the noise levels for the speeds you'll use at night.
- Placement: a spot with open space around it.
- Smart features: the listing doesn't mention app control; confirm it if that matters to you.
