The dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 is a robot vacuum and mop with an all-in-one, self-cleaning dock. It vacuums and mops in one run, reaches into corners with an extending brush and mop, and returns to a dock that washes and dries its mop pads, refills its water and empties its dust bin. The aim is clean floors with much less hands-on upkeep.
Suction and carpet handling
dreame rates the suction at 25,000 Pa, with five levels to choose from. Pascals (Pa) measure the pressure difference a vacuum creates; higher figures help pull dust and debris out of carpet, although brush design and airflow matter as much as the headline number. Lower levels are typically quieter and use less battery on hard floors.
For carpets, there are four modes:
- carpet avoidance, to keep the robot off rugs;
- suction boost, to raise suction on carpet;
- intensive carpet cleaning for a more thorough pass;
- mop lifting of 0.41 inches (about 10 mm), so the pads clear low rugs.
Corners and edges
Round robots often leave a line of dust in corners and along walls, because their shape can't reach right in. The L40 Ultra Gen 2 extends its side brush and its mop outward to reach into corners and under furniture.
DuoScrub mopping
Mopping is done by two rotating pads, called DuoScrub, with 32 levels of moisture control. In general, more water suits sealed tile and vinyl, while less is gentler on floors that don't like moisture, such as some wood floors. Check your flooring's care advice before setting it.
What the dock does
The dock is what makes this a largely hands-off system:
- it washes the mop pads and dries them with hot air, which helps keep damp pads from turning musty;
- it refills the robot's water box automatically;
- it empties the dust bin, and dreame lists up to 100 days of auto-emptying.
An auto-detergent dispenser is an optional module, available separately; once it's fitted, you turn on auto-dispensing for mop cleaning in the DreameHome app.
There's still some upkeep. Docks of this type typically have a clean-water tank to refill and a dirty-water tank to empty, and brushes, filters and mop pads wear over time.
Battery, mapping and controls
dreame lists up to 231 minutes and 1,679 sq ft (about 156 m²) of cleaning in Quiet mode, from a 5,200 mAh battery.
Smart Pathfinder and 3DAdapt technology map the home and steer around obstacles such as shoes. Mapping includes 3D maps, maps for more than one floor and no-go zones, so you can keep the robot away from pet bowls or a tangle of cables.
You can run it from the app or with popular voice assistants. It connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only and is for use in the USA only.
Who it suits
It suits homes with a mix of hard floors and carpets, including homes with pets, where you'd like vacuuming and mopping to run with little day-to-day attention.
What to check before you buy
- Dock space: the listed dimensions are about 13.8 x 13.4 x 23.3 inches; check the spot has clearance around it and a nearby outlet.
- Wi-Fi: your router needs to offer a 2.4 GHz network.
- Floors: thick rugs, high thresholds and floors that shouldn't get wet.
- Parts: how easy it is to find replacement dust bags, mop pads, brushes and filters.
- Detergent module: optional and available separately, if you want automatic dosing.
