The Vantrue N4 Pro S is a three-camera dash cam that records the road ahead, the cabin and the rear of the vehicle. It adds GPS, Wi-Fi and a parking mode, and is aimed at everyday drivers, families and professional drivers who want a record of what happens on the road. This page covers the specs and what to confirm before buying.

Three cameras

The front camera records 4K in every mode and has a 155° field of view. The cabin camera covers 160° and records in 1080P. The rear camera covers 165° and records up to 2.5K. Vantrue says all three use STARVIS 2 sensors, which are designed for low-light video, and uses an IMX678 sensor in front and IMX662 at the rear. A front-and-rear mode switches off the cabin camera, which Vantrue says extends recording time and runs about 30% cooler than three-channel mode.

Night and plate capture

The brand adds adaptive HDR and infrared night vision for the cabin camera, and a feature called PlatePix aimed at making licence plates easier to read. Vantrue claims twice the plate recognition accuracy of other 4K dash cams in extreme lighting. As with any dash cam, results at speed or in poor light vary.

Rear camera

The rear camera is IP67 certified, meaning it is protected against dust and temporary immersion, so Vantrue says it can be mounted on the outside of pickups, SUVs, RVs and trailers. An extended rear cable is available separately for longer vehicles.

GPS, Wi-Fi and the app

Built-in GPS records speed and route, and a mileage statistics feature logs average and top speed, altitude, time and distance. A PDF report can be generated for insurance use, according to Vantrue. Wi-Fi at 5GHz connects to the Vantrue app for iOS and Android to view GPS-tagged clips, share them and update firmware.

Collisions and parking

An adjustable G-sensor locks footage when it detects an impact so loop recording doesn't overwrite it. In parking mode, buffered motion detection saves footage from 10 seconds before motion to 30 seconds after, with low frame rate and bitrate options to stretch storage. Full 24-hour parking mode needs a separate hardwiring kit. The camera runs on a supercapacitor instead of a battery, which Vantrue says suits extreme temperatures.

Storage and install

It supports memory cards up to 1TB, sold separately. A magnetic sliding bracket makes mounting and removal quick. The front unit is about 1.7 x 5.2 x 2.3 inches and 0.5 lb. Vantrue lists an 18-month extended warranty and says the cam is not compatible with PD fast charging: use the included car charger or Vantrue cables, and connect the rear cable to the REAR port.

Who it suits

It suits drivers who want coverage of the road and the cabin, such as rideshare, delivery and family drivers, plus anyone wanting GPS logs and parking recording.

What to check before you buy

  • Local rules: check laws on windscreen mounting and on recording video and audio in your area.
  • Memory card: choose a card type the manual recommends, since dash cams write constantly.
  • Parking mode: confirm whether you need the hardwiring kit.
  • Cable routing: plan the rear cable path for your vehicle.
  • Power: use the supplied charger or cables as the manufacturer says.
