The REDTIGER F4 is a compact dash cam that records the road ahead in 4K and stores video on a memory card. It has a built-in screen, GPS and WiFi, and responds to voice commands. Here is what the specs mean and what to confirm before fitting one.

4K resolution and field of view

REDTIGER lists 3840 × 2160 recording through a 160-degree lens. Higher resolution generally means more detail when you zoom into footage, such as a number plate or a road sign, though the lens, the sensor and the lighting matter as much as the pixel count. A wide lens covers more lanes but makes distant objects smaller. The brand also describes night vision technology for low-light scenes. An optional rear camera is available, recording the front at 2.5K at 30 fps and the rear at 1080p at 30 fps. That is a separate purchase.

Screen and voice control

A 2.2-inch touch screen handles menus, settings and playback on the unit itself. Voice commands let you trigger actions without taking your hands off the wheel. Check which commands and languages the F4 supports.

GPS and WiFi

The built-in GPS logs your route and speed alongside the video. The WiFi link connects to the REDTIGER app so you can view, set up and share footage from your phone, which can be easier than removing the memory card.

Loop recording, G-sensor and parking mode

Loop recording overwrites the oldest files when the card is full, so the camera records continuously. The G-sensor detects a sudden impact and locks the current clip so it will not be overwritten. REDTIGER also lists 24-hour parking monitoring. It notes that the hardwire kit is sold separately, and parking monitoring generally needs a constant power source rather than a cigarette-lighter socket, which often switches off with the ignition.

Storage

A 32 GB card is included, and the camera supports cards up to 256 GB. At 4K, files are large, so a 32 GB card holds a limited amount of footage before looping. Many owners use a larger high-endurance card made for constant rewriting. REDTIGER lists an 18-month guarantee and technical support.

What to check before you buy

  • Local rules: check the laws on windscreen mounting and on recording video and audio where you drive.
  • Fit and view: confirm the camera sits behind your mirror without blocking your view or sensors.
  • Power: decide whether you need the hardwire kit for parking mode.
  • Memory card: consider the size and type you will want for 4K.
  • Rear camera: if you want front and rear recording, check which version includes it.
