The Philips Ultinon Pro6000 Boost Gen2 H4-LED is a pair of LED bulbs designed to replace the H4 halogen lamps in a vehicle's headlights. Philips positions the range as road-legal LED retrofits for the models and lighting functions on its compatibility list, which is the key difference from many generic LED bulbs.

What "approved" means here

Philips states that the range is approved for road traffic in the countries where approval exists, and only for the vehicle models and lighting functions it lists. Responsibility for meeting local legal requirements lies with the user. Before buying, check the compatibility list on the Philips site for your vehicle and country, and follow local rules and the vehicle manual.

Brightness and beam

Philips says the bulbs give up to 300% more brightness than the minimum legal standard for halogen lamps. That is a comparison with the legal minimum, not with every halogen bulb. The brand also describes SafeBeam technology, meant to give a precise, steady beam that lights where you need it. In general, a bulb whose light source sits in the same position as the halogen filament helps a headlight reflector to shape the beam properly.

5800K colour temperature

Colour temperature is measured in kelvin. Halogen lamps are typically warmer and more yellow, while 5800K is a whiter, daylight-like light. Philips says this temperature was approved by car manufacturers and gives a light spectrum with better contrast.

Direct-fit design and cooling

The bulbs are compact enough for a 1:1 swap with the halogen lamp without larger covers, according to Philips. An AirBoost cooling system manages heat, since LEDs need heat control to last. Philips quotes up to 3,000 hours of operation, which it says is six times that of a halogen lamp.

Warranty

Philips describes a two-year warranty on purchase, plus three years of free extended warranty after registration. It covers manufacturing defects and non-commercial use. Read the warranty terms on the Philips site.

Installation

Philips advises checking whether your vehicle needs an additional accessory, and following the assembly instructions before and after installation. If you are unsure, have a qualified technician fit and aim the lamps.

Who it suits

It suits drivers whose vehicle is on the Philips compatibility list and who want to move from halogen to LED while keeping the headlights approved for road use.

What to check before you buy

  • Compatibility: confirm the bulb type (H4) and that your exact model is on the compatibility list.
  • Accessories: find out whether your vehicle needs an extra adapter or part.
  • Local rules: check the legal status of LED retrofits where you drive.
  • Fit: make sure there is room behind the headlight for the cooling system.
  • Aim: have the headlight aim checked after fitting.
