The VEVOR MD200GT is an 8-inch bench grinder with a speed control. A 550W induction motor spins two grinding wheels, and VEVOR lists sharpening knives, blades, chisels and axes among its jobs. Bolted to a bench, it is a general-purpose workshop machine for shaping and sharpening metal.
Variable speed and the motor
Many bench grinders run at a single fixed speed. This one varies from 2000 to 3450 RPM. VEVOR says low speeds give precise control for delicate work, while high speeds remove material quickly. In general, lower speeds also help when sharpening tools, because less heat builds up at the edge, and overheating can soften hardened steel.
The motor is an induction type rated at 550W and 5.0A, or 3/4 HP. Induction motors are typically quieter and longer-lived than brushed motors, and they suit continuous bench use. Check the manual for the duty cycle.
Two wheels, two jobs
The grinder comes with two brown fused alumina wheels. One is 36-grit for fast stock removal, such as reshaping a damaged edge or removing rust. The other is 60-grit for finer, more precise work. Lower grit numbers mean coarser abrasive. Brown fused alumina is a common general-purpose abrasive for steel. Wheels wear down and should be replaced when they are worn, chipped or cracked, and only with wheels rated for the machine's maximum speed and shaft size.
Eye shield and work rest
A clear, adjustable eye shield sits over each wheel. VEVOR says it can be set at several angles and doesn't block your view while shielding you from flying debris. It is not a substitute for proper safety glasses, and standard advice is to wear eye protection, hearing protection and, where relevant, a dust mask.
The work rest supports the workpiece at the right height and angle, and VEVOR says it adjusts without tools. As a general rule, keep the gap between the rest and the wheel small, and check it as the wheel wears.
Stability
A heavy-duty steel plate body and a cast iron base give the grinder weight, and the machine as a whole is 37.3 lb (about 17 kg). Rubber feet reduce vibration. Grinders still work best when bolted down to a sturdy bench, where the mounting holes allow.
Who it suits
It suits home workshops, garages and hobbyists who sharpen garden tools, knives and chisels, deburr metal or shape small parts. Anyone who needs to remove a lot of material all day, or who wants fine edges such as on woodworking chisels, may also want to learn about sharpening accessories, but that depends on the job.
What to check before you buy
- Bench space: the 8-inch wheels need room for the guards and work rests.
- Power: it draws 5.0A; confirm the outlet and circuit.
- Wheel types: check which replacement wheels fit and what the maximum rated speed is.
- Protective gear: plan for safety glasses, hearing protection and sensible clothing; keep sleeves and hair away from the wheel.
- Use: inspect wheels before each use and follow the manual.
