The VEVOR HSH0.5T is a manual lever chain hoist, often called a come-along. A short ratchet handle moves a load chain, so one person can lift or pull a load that would be hard to shift by hand. VEVOR rates it at 1/2 ton (1,100 lb) and describes it for warehouses, construction sites and garages.
How a lever hoist works
Instead of a hand chain, a lever hoist uses a handle that you pump back and forth. A three-position selector switches between lifting, neutral and lowering. Neutral frees the chain so it can be run out quickly to the load, and the lifting and lowering modes then move the load a small step with each stroke. Because it needs no power, a lever hoist is useful where there is no electricity or where the load must be moved in tight spaces. Lever hoists can also be used to pull or tension loads, such as dragging small logs, which VEVOR lists as an application.
Capacity and lift
The stated capacity is 1/2 ton, or 1,100 lb. The chain gives 10 ft (3 m) of lift. Hoist capacities apply to the working load, and they assume correct use, so check the manual and never exceed the limit marked on the product.
Chain, brake and hooks
- G80 alloy steel chain: Grade 80 is a common standard for chain used in overhead lifting. VEVOR lists the chain as 4 mm thick and galvanized for corrosion resistance.
- Dual pawl brake: VEVOR describes a Weston-type mechanical brake with two pawls engaged with the gear, intended to hold the load and prevent slipping or sudden drops.
- 360° swivel hooks: these let the hoist be used at different angles without the chain twisting.
- Guided slot: an upgraded chain guide is meant to keep the chain moving without jamming.
Handle and build
The 360° rotating handle has a non-slip ergonomic grip, which helps in confined spaces where a full swing is not possible. The body is all steel, and VEVOR says it resists impact and breakage. At 7.2 lb (about 3.3 kg) and roughly 11.2 inches long, it is compact, and a storage bag is included.
Who it suits
It suits workshops, garages, farms and job sites that occasionally need to lift engines, machinery or building materials at modest weights, and anyone needing a portable pulling tool. It is less suited to frequent heavy production lifting, where a larger or powered hoist is more typical.
What to check before you buy
- Load weight: include rigging, slings and attachments, and stay within 1,100 lb.
- Lift height: 10 ft of chain must cover the distance you need.
- Anchor point: the beam, tripod or frame holding the hoist must be rated for the load.
- Training and rules: overhead lifting carries risks, so follow the manual and any workplace or local regulations.
- Inspection: examine the chain, hooks and brake before each use, as the manual describes.
- Hook size: make sure the hooks suit your slings or lifting points.
