The VEVOR DC-003 is a corded SDS-Max rotary hammer for drilling and chipping in concrete, brick and masonry. SDS-Max is the larger of the common hammer-drill bit systems, used for big holes and demolition work such as lifting tiles or breaking out brickwork.

Motor and impact energy

VEVOR rates the machine at 13 amps and 10 joules of impact energy, with a maximum drilling diameter of 1-9/16 inches (42 mm) and a copper-wire motor said to resist heat. Impact energy in joules measures how hard each blow lands, so a higher figure typically suits bigger holes and tougher material. The brand's materials also state 1600W in one place and a 760W motor power in the specification table, so check the electrical details with the maker or the manual.

Three modes

Two switches select drill only (VEVOR suggests wood and steel), hammer only (concrete and brick, as in chiselling) and hammer drill (heavy-duty drilling). VEVOR says the double-switch design is meant to last longer than a single switch.

Speed and impact rate

A dial gives six speed settings. No-load speed is up to 560 rpm, and the maximum impact rate is 3,600 blows per minute. Lower speeds help start a hole without wandering, while higher ones suit continuing the work.

Handle and vibration control

VEVOR fits a vibration control design to reduce the shake that reaches your hands, and a 360-degree adjustable handle for comfort and control. The listing also mentions a safety clutch, which typically limits the twisting force that reaches you if the bit jams. A heavy tool still demands a firm stance and two hands.

What is in the case

The kit has one drill bit, one chisel, grease, two carbon brushes, a wrench and a portable carrying case. Grease is to be added regularly, according to VEVOR, to keep the hammer working. The cord is 2 m (78.7 inches) long and the voltage is 110V.

Size and weight

The tool measures about 18.1 x 10.7 x 4.5 inches (460 x 272 x 114 mm). The listing gives 22.0 lb for the shipped item and 16 lb (7.3 kg) for the tool itself.

Who it suits

It suits renovators and home users with concrete, masonry or tiling jobs, as well as light professional use, according to VEVOR.

What to check before you buy

  • Bit system: confirm that you have SDS-Max bits, since SDS-Plus bits will not fit this chuck.
  • Power supply: check that your outlet, circuit and any extension cord are rated for a 13A tool.
  • Weight: an 16 lb tool is tiring overhead, so plan the work.
  • Protection: use eye, ear and dust protection and follow the manual.
  • Hidden services: check for wires and pipes before drilling into walls, and follow local codes.
  • Upkeep: note the greasing routine and how the carbon brushes are replaced.

The short version

  • A corded SDS-Max rotary hammer with 10J impact energy and a 42 mm maximum drilling diameter.
  • Drill, hammer and hammer-drill modes, six speeds, up to 3,600 blows per minute.
  • Vibration control, adjustable handle and safety clutch.
  • Includes a bit, chisel, grease, spare brushes, wrench and case.
  • About 16 lb; power figures in the listing differ, so check the manual.
