The VEVOR CLB16GPM is a two-stage hydraulic gear pump designed to supply a log splitter with pressurised oil. It is a replacement or build part: it bolts to a small engine and feeds a hydraulic cylinder. VEVOR also lists presses, machine tools and snowplow hydraulic systems as uses.
What two stages means
A two-stage pump combines a high-volume stage and a high-pressure stage. At low load, both stages deliver oil together, so the ram moves quickly. When the load rises, as when a log meets the wedge, the pump shifts to the smaller, high-pressure stage, which keeps the engine from stalling. This is why two-stage pumps are the usual choice for engine-driven splitters.
Flow, pressure and speed
VEVOR rates the pump at:
- 16 GPM maximum flow;
- 4,000 PSI maximum operating pressure;
- 3,600 RPM maximum speed.
Flow, together with engine speed and cylinder size, sets how fast the ram moves. Pressure, together with piston area, sets the splitting force. The system's relief valve, hoses and cylinder must all be rated for the pressure involved, not just the pump.
Connections and shaft
The pump has a 1-inch inlet and a 1/2-inch NPT outlet. The shaft is 1.5 inches long and 1/2 inch in diameter. Check these dimensions against your engine's coupler or your existing pump, because mismatched shaft sizes and port threads are the commonest cause of fitting trouble. VEVOR says the pump is compatible with many OEM log splitters, naming Speeco, Huskee and Champion.
Construction
The housing is aluminium alloy, which VEVOR says gives durability and corrosion resistance outdoors. Aluminium also keeps weight down on an engine-mounted assembly. The brand quotes a noise level below 75 dB. Gear pumps are usually louder than the engine hiding behind them, so engine noise will likely dominate.
Where it fits
It suits someone repairing or building a log splitter, or adapting a hydraulic circuit for a press or snowplow. It is a pump alone: the reservoir, filter, valve, hoses, cylinder and coupler are separate.
What to check before you buy
- Engine power: check that your engine can drive a 16 GPM pump at the loads it will see.
- Shaft and coupler: confirm the 1/2 inch shaft and 1.5 inch length suit your coupler, and the rotation direction.
- Port threads: check the 1-inch inlet and 1/2-inch NPT outlet against your hoses and fittings.
- Rest of the system: make sure the valve, hoses and cylinder are rated for the pressure you will run.
- Oil and filtration: use the hydraulic oil your system's manual specifies, and keep a clean filter.
- Guarding: follow the manual and standard practice for guarding moving parts and relieving pressure before any work.
The short version
- A two-stage aluminium hydraulic gear pump for engine-driven log splitters.
- Rated by VEVOR at 16 GPM, 4,000 PSI and 3,600 RPM.
- 1-inch inlet, 1/2-inch NPT outlet, 1/2-inch by 1.5-inch shaft.
- Listed for log splitters, presses, machine tools and snowplow systems.
- Pump only; the rest of the hydraulic system must be rated to match.
