The VEVOR AMX-FAGEC20 is a 20-inch exhaust fan with automatic shutters, built to be mounted in a wall. It moves hot, humid or stale air out of a shed, garage, workshop, greenhouse or attic, and it adjusts its own speed as conditions change. Here is what the specs mean and what to check before fitting one.

What 2900 CFM means

CFM (cubic feet per minute) describes how much air a fan can move. VEVOR rates this model at 2900 CFM and says it also produces airflow of up to 6.5 m/s. Free-air figures like these are normally measured without resistance, so a fan pulling air through a small intake will deliver less. For good results the space needs enough intake opening to let replacement air in.

The EC motor

An EC (electronically commutated) motor is a brushless design that typically runs efficiently across a range of speeds, and usually more quietly than a basic AC motor at low settings. VEVOR lists this one at 75W and 1000 RPM, and says it runs smoothly with low noise. Speed control is the main reason to choose EC in a fan like this, since the controller can slow it right down instead of simply switching it on and off.

Smart programming

The controller has temperature and humidity triggers and up to 10 speed settings that adjust automatically as conditions change. VEVOR also lists multiple modes, a timer and an alarm. In a greenhouse or damp shed, humidity-based control is useful because the fan can run when the air gets muggy even if it is not particularly hot.

Shutters and weather protection

The shutters open when the fan is powered and close when it stops. VEVOR says this blocks rain and small objects and helps prevent odours and draughts coming back in when the fan is off. The body is all-metal steel, which the brand describes as rigid, resistant to deformation and ready to handle damp and rain. Steel is stronger than plastic, though any outdoor-exposed metal benefits from a periodic check of its finish.

Size and weight

The fan measures about 23.0 x 23.0 x 8.5 inches (about 58 x 58 x 22 cm) and weighs 16.4 lb (about 7.4 kg). The 20-inch fan size is smaller than the overall frame, so check the required wall opening in the manual.

Where it suits

VEVOR names sheds, garages, greenhouses and workshops, and describes it as suitable for year-round attic ventilation. It suits outbuildings and workspaces where you want automatic control without constant attention.

What to check before you buy

  • Wall opening and framing: confirm the cut-out size and that the wall can carry about 16 lb.
  • Intake air: plan a separate opening or vent for replacement air.
  • Electrical supply: check the voltage and wiring requirements in the manual, and have mains wiring done to local codes, by a qualified person where required.
  • Controls: read how the temperature, humidity and timer settings are programmed.
  • Upkeep: dust on the blades and shutters should be cleaned from time to time.
