The VEVOR 16 x 20 inch heat press is a clamshell machine for transferring designs onto fabric and other surfaces using heat and pressure. It is used for custom T-shirts, bags, pillowcases and gifts, with heat transfer vinyl or sublimation prints. The large platen takes adult-sized shirt designs in one press.

How a heat press works

A heat press holds a transfer against the item at a set temperature, for a set time, under even pressure. Those three settings decide whether a transfer bonds well. Too little heat or pressure and the design peels. Too much can scorch fabric or make colours dull. Transfer materials come with their own recommended settings, so use those as your starting point.

A clamshell press opens like a mouth, with the upper platen swinging up and back. It takes less bench space than a swing-away press, though the platen stays above the work area, so it needs a little care when loading.

Platen size and heating pad

The platen is 16 x 20 inches (40.6 x 51 cm). VEVOR says the heating pad is silica gel over a sponge layer, and gives it a service life of 20,000 hours. The soft pad helps with uneven surfaces such as seams and zips. A thickened board is said to hold heat well, which matters for an even transfer across the whole area.

Temperature and time control

A digital panel sets temperature and time, and an alarm sounds when the cycle ends. The listing gives two different sets of figures. The feature list says 1700W, 110V, 0-570°F (0-299°C), and the description gives 1500W and 0-482°F (0-250°C). Time control runs from 0 to 999 seconds in both. If the exact heating range matters for your materials, check the manual or confirm with the seller before ordering.

Pressure and the Teflon cover

A full-range knob adjusts pressure by turning it clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on the thickness of the item. VEVOR suggests trying a few test presses to find the right setting. A non-slip rubber grip is fitted to the handle. A Teflon coating on the upper platen is said to lower the surface temperature to the touch and cut the chance of clothes sticking, and it wipes clean.

What you can press

VEVOR lists T-shirts, hoodies, trousers, pillows, bags, table mats, phone cases and ceramic tiles, on fabrics such as cotton, nylon, linen and heat transfer vinyl. Some materials, such as hard goods, need specific coated blanks and sublimation transfers. Check that your blank is made for heat transfer.

Size and weight

The press weighs about 55-61 lb depending on which listing figure you use (roughly 25-27 kg), and measures about 24-25 x 20 x 14.5 inches (62-64 x 51-52 x 37 cm). It needs a sturdy bench and room for the lid to open. The package includes the press, a silica-gel pad and a sponge pad.

Who it suits

It suits home crafters, small online sellers and anyone making team shirts or gifts in small runs. People who need a smaller footprint may prefer a smaller platen; those pressing very small items often find a large platen unnecessary.

What to check before you buy

  • Bench space and weight: confirm a bench can hold about 60 lb and leave room for the lid.
  • Power: it needs a 110V outlet; check the circuit's amp capacity.
  • Temperature range: the listing gives two maxima, so confirm the one you need.
  • Your transfers: check the temperature, time and pressure your vinyl or sublimation paper calls for.
  • Safety: the platen gets very hot. Follow the manual and keep it away from children and pets.

The short version

  • A 16 x 20 inch clamshell heat press with digital temperature and time control (up to 999 seconds).
  • Silica-gel and sponge pads, adjustable pressure knob and a Teflon-coated platen.
  • Listed power and temperature figures differ between the feature list and description, so confirm them.
  • Suits T-shirts, bags, pillows and other transfer projects.
  • Heavy at about 55-61 lb and needs a sturdy bench.
