The VEVOR 15 Ton Hydraulic Gear Puller is a workshop tool for drawing parts off a shaft. It is used on hubs, flanges, gears, pulleys, flywheels and bearings that have seized or are pressed on too tightly to remove by hand. A hydraulic pump drives the force, so the work is done by moving a handle rather than hitting the part.

How a hydraulic puller works

The jaws hook behind the part you want to remove. A hydraulic pump then pushes a piston against the end of the shaft, and the jaws pull the part away. VEVOR says the tool combines the pump, oil tube and puller in one unit, and that the piston moves forward smoothly and steadily under oil pressure. Steady force is typically gentler on the shaft and bearings than striking the part.

Capacity, reach and spread

VEVOR rates the puller at 15 tons maximum capacity (33,069 lb). The listing gives these working dimensions:

  • Axis travel: 2 inches (50 mm)
  • Reach: up to 7 inches (180 mm)
  • Spread: about 4 to 12 inches (100 to 300 mm)

Reach is how far the jaws can go along the shaft, while spread is the widest part they can grip. Check both against the part you intend to pull.

Two or three jaws

You can fit either two or three jaws and adjust the height as needed. Two jaws can suit parts with limited access. Three jaws spread the load more evenly around a round part such as a hub. A centralised positioning device is included to keep the tool lined up.

Build and safety features

The puller is made of forged steel. VEVOR says it has no oil leakage and a long service life. A safety relief valve is there to avoid overloading, and the pump head rotates 360 degrees. It can work horizontally or vertically. It weighs 7.7 lb and packs in a 17.3 x 12.6 x 4.7 inch case.

Who it suits

VEVOR names car maintenance, mechanical factories and repair workshops. It would also suit home garages that work on wheel hubs, pulleys or gears. Pulling under high force builds up energy, so wear eye protection and follow the manual.

What to check before you buy

  • Part size: compare the part's diameter and the shaft length with the reach and spread above.
  • Lip or grip point: the jaws need a lip or edge behind the part to hook onto.
  • Capacity: the 15-ton figure is a maximum, so check that your job is within it.
  • Oil and upkeep: check the manual for how to top up and keep the unit between jobs.
  • Workspace: make sure you have room to line up the tool and stay clear of the line of force.
