The VEVOR 13-inch benchtop planer is a thickness planer for woodworkers. It shaves rough or uneven boards down to a consistent thickness with a smooth surface, which is a common step when you buy rough lumber or want to match the thickness of several pieces. It sits on a workbench and weighs about 58 lb (26 kg).

What a thickness planer does

A thickness planer feeds a board under a spinning cutter head, removing a thin layer from the top face on each pass. Because the bed holds the board flat and the cutter sits at a set height, the finished board has a face that is parallel to the underside. It does not flatten a warped board on its own, so woodworkers typically flatten one face first and then plane the other to match.

Capacity: 13 inches wide, 6 inches thick

VEVOR says the planer takes boards up to 13 inches wide and 6 inches thick. A 13-inch width covers most shelving, tabletop strips, drawer stock and trim. The cast iron bed and steel plate are described as helping keep boards flat. Pull-out extension tables bring the total support length to 35 inches, which helps with long stock: unsupported boards tend to tip as they enter or leave, and that can cause uneven cuts at the ends.

Motor and cutter head

The motor is a 15-amp, 1800W unit running at 23,500 rpm. A higher cutter-head speed usually means more cuts per inch of board, and that typically leaves a smoother finish. The cutter head holds two knives made of quenched and hardened steel, which VEVOR rates at HRC 55 to 60 hardness. The head is described as quick-change, so swapping dull knives for fresh ones should be simple. Two-knife heads are common on benchtop planers. Replacement knives and the setting method are covered in the manual.

Overload protection

A built-in 20A over-current protector cuts power if the current passes 20 amps. That helps guard the motor and wiring if the machine is pushed too hard. Taking lighter passes and letting the feed rate do its work is the usual way to avoid triggering it.

Dust collection

Planers throw a lot of chips. The VEVOR has a vacuum port, and the chip ejection can be connected to a vacuum cleaner or dust collector. A hose connection typically keeps the workshop cleaner and the chip path clear. Always wear eye and ear protection and follow the safety instructions in the manual.

Who it suits

It suits home woodworkers, hobbyists and small workshops who want to prepare their own lumber from rough boards, and people making furniture or cabinet parts who need matching thicknesses. VEVOR says it works on both hard and soft wood and calls it low noise, though planers of this size are loud by nature, so hearing protection is still sensible.

What to check before you buy

  • Power: a 15-amp motor needs a suitable outlet and circuit; avoid long, thin extension cords.
  • Bench space: it is about 22 x 18 x 14 inches and 58 lb, so check your bench and how you will move it.
  • Board length and support: plan for outfeed support if you often plane long stock.
  • Dust extraction: confirm that the port size matches your vacuum or collector hose.
  • Knives: check how to replace and set the knives, and whether you want spares.
  • Material: remove nails, staples and grit from boards before planing.

The short version

  • A benchtop thickness planer for boards up to 13 inches wide and 6 inches thick.
  • 15-amp, 1800W motor at 23,500 rpm with a two-knife quick-change cutter head.
  • 35 inches of total table length with the extensions, and a cast iron bed.
  • Built-in 20A over-current protection and a vacuum port for dust.
  • About 58 lb, made for hard and soft wood.
