The Veise VE012W-L is a keypad deadbolt with a fingerprint reader and built-in Wi-Fi, sold with a matching matte black lever handle set. It lets you open the door with a finger, a code, your phone or a key, and it can send alerts and access logs to your phone. Here is what its features mean and what to check before fitting one.

Seven ways to use it

Veise lists seven ways to lock and unlock:

  • the app, from home or away;
  • fingerprints;
  • passcodes on the keypad;
  • voice control through Alexa or Google Assistant;
  • auto-lock and one-touch locking from the keypad;
  • two physical keys;
  • temporary access for visitors.

The app can connect over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, and Veise says using both gives more flexibility and wider coverage.

The fingerprint reader

Veise rates the fingerprint unlock at about 0.2 seconds, and the lock stores more than 20 fingerprints, so a whole household can be added. You can add, rename or delete fingerprints from the app without being at the door. As with most fingerprint readers, clean and dry fingers generally read fastest.

Wi-Fi without a hub

The lock connects straight to your home Wi-Fi, with no separate hub or bridge. It uses the 2.4 GHz band only. Many routers broadcast both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, typically under one network name or two, so it's worth checking that a 2.4 GHz network is available where the door is.

From the app, you can lock or unlock remotely, check whether the door is locked and how much battery is left, view real-time access logs, and get alerts and low-battery reminders.

Codes for family, tenants and visitors

The keypad supports more than 100 codes, which can be permanent, recurring, limited to a time window, or one-time. You can create, share and delete them from the app, which suits a dog walker, a cleaner or a short-term guest. An anti-peeping feature lets you type extra random digits around your real code, so someone watching can't easily learn it. Repeated wrong codes set off an alarm and lock the keypad for a while.

Three modes for different situations

  • Vacation Mode: the lock opens only with the app or a key, and any other attempt sets off an alarm.
  • Silent Mode: keypad sounds are muted, while low-battery and security alerts still sound.
  • Passage Mode: auto-lock is switched off, for moving days or gatherings when people come and go.

Power and data

The lock runs on eight AA batteries, which aren't included, and warns you when they run low. Two backup keys come with it. Veise says lock data, including access logs, user details, codes and fingerprints, is encrypted and stored locally on the lock's chip.

Fit and installation

The lock fits doors from 1-3/8 to 2 inches (35-50 mm) thick. The product images add the usual bore measurements for this kind of lock: a 2-1/8 inch (54 mm) hole, a backset of 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches (60 or 70 mm), and a minimum of 4 inches (about 102 mm) between the deadbolt and handle holes. They also show that it isn't meant for mortise locks.

Veise says it meets BHMA/ANSI standards and has IP55 weather resistance, and that it installs in about 15 minutes with only a screwdriver, using the manual and a video guide. It is listed for indoor or front doors.

Veise lists a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years with product registration, with US phone support on weekdays and Saturdays and 24/7 email support.

Who it suits

It suits households that want keyless entry with app control, landlords and hosts who hand out temporary codes, and families who want to see who came and went.

What to check before you buy

  • Your door: measure the thickness, bore hole, backset and the distance between the holes, and check it isn't a mortise lock.
  • Your Wi-Fi: confirm a 2.4 GHz network reaches the door.
  • Batteries: buy eight AA batteries, and keep a backup key where you can reach it if they run flat.
  • Installation: follow the manual, and test every unlocking method with the door open before closing it.
  • Voice assistants: check that your Alexa or Google Assistant setup supports smart locks the way you plan to use them.
