The Veise VL-100 is a smart door lock set that combines a deadbolt, a lever handle and a touchscreen keypad in one satin nickel unit. It is meant for people who are tired of carrying and copying keys, and who want to give guests or house sitters access without handing over a physical key. Here is what its features mean and what to confirm before you fit it.
Five ways to unlock the door
Veise lists five methods: the smartphone app, a keypad code, key fobs, a mechanical key and a thumb turn on the inside. Having a mechanical key as a backup is a sensible feature on any electronic lock, because it means a flat battery or a phone problem doesn't leave you outside. The thumb turn lets you lock and unlock from indoors without a code.
Codes, eKeys and the app
The brand says the lock supports more than 250 user codes. Through the app and its website management system, the owner can generate one-time, permanent, scheduled and recurring codes, create eKeys for other people, manage users and view access records. In general, scheduled and one-time codes suit cleaners, dog walkers, short-term guests and tradespeople, because access can end without changing the lock. Veise names houses, rentals, apartments and offices as the intended uses.
The listing includes one setup note worth following: don't change the master password from the keypad before the lock has been paired in the app. You may need to touch the keypad to wake the lock first, and if the app can't find it, a reset is the suggested fix.
Auto-lock and other modes
Veise lists auto-lock, one-touch locking, privacy mode, passage mode and a low-battery alert. Auto-lock re-secures the door after a set time, which helps if you tend to forget. Privacy mode generally stops outside codes from opening the door while you are inside. Passage mode keeps the door unlocked, which is handy during a party or a busy workday at an office. The touchscreen keypad is described as anti-peeping and anti-hacking.
Adding the G2 gateway
The app connects to the lock over Bluetooth. Veise says that adding its G2 gateway, which is sold separately, enables remote access, voice control through Alexa and Google Home, real-time push notifications and status monitoring. Without the gateway, you should expect to be near the door to use the app. Check the gateway's requirements, such as Wi-Fi and a nearby power outlet, before relying on remote features.
Fitting it to your door
The lock is rated for most standard US doors between 1-3/8 and 2 inches (about 35 to 51 mm) thick, and for both left-handed and right-handed doors. Its adjustable design is meant to use existing pre-drilled holes. A set like this typically needs a screwdriver and a little patience rather than special tools, but follow the instructions closely and test the bolt with the door open before closing it.
Veise offers at least a one-year warranty, phone support on weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM Pacific time and email support at all hours.
Who it suits
It suits homeowners who want keyless entry, landlords and hosts who change guests often, and small offices that need to manage staff access. It is less obviously useful if you need strict door-by-door compatibility with an unusual lock format, since it is built around the US standard.
What to check before you buy
- Door thickness and preparation: confirm that your door is between 1-3/8 and 2 inches thick and has standard holes.
- Handle style: this is a set with a lever handle, so check that it suits your door and clearance.
- Remote features: decide whether you need the separate G2 gateway, and what it requires.
- Batteries: find out what type it takes and how the low-battery alert works, and keep the mechanical key somewhere reachable.
- Phone and app: check that your phone supports the app and that you're comfortable managing access by it.
- Local rules: if it is for a rental or workplace, check any lease, insurance or building requirements, and follow the manual.
