The Renogy REGO is a 12V DC to 120V AC inverter charger rated at 3000W continuous output. It turns battery power into household-style mains power, and it can also charge the battery bank when it's connected to an AC source. That makes it a central part of many off-grid cabins, RVs, vans and backup-power systems.

What an inverter charger does

An inverter changes direct current from a battery into alternating current, so ordinary plug-in appliances can run. A charger does the reverse, taking AC power and refilling the batteries. Combining the two in one unit means fewer boxes to mount and wire. Renogy lists the REGO's conversion efficiency as greater than 90%, which means most of the battery's energy reaches the appliance rather than being lost as heat.

Pure sine wave output and power figures

The REGO produces a pure sine wave, the smooth waveform that utility power uses. In general, pure sine wave output suits sensitive electronics, motor-driven tools and appliances with timers or variable-speed controls better than the simpler modified-sine type. Renogy lists the output as 3000W continuous with peaks up to 9000W, and the frequency can be adjusted between 50 and 60Hz.

The peak figure matters for loads that draw a surge when they start, such as compressors and pumps. The continuous figure is what the unit can supply for as long as you need. Add up the running watts of everything you plan to use at once, and allow for starting surges.

Charging and battery types

Renogy says the unit works with Gel, AGM, sealed lead acid, flooded, calcium and lithium iron phosphate batteries, with a USER mode for custom charging settings. Charging runs in four stages: bulk, boost, float and equalization (EQU). In broad terms, bulk and boost put most of the energy in quickly, float holds the battery at full charge, and equalization is a periodic conditioning step used with some lead-acid types.

For lithium users, the listing mentions a lithium reactivation function and the ability to supply power to self-heating lithium batteries.

Bluetooth monitoring

Built-in Bluetooth lets you check the unit's status in the Renogy app on a smartphone, so you don't have to walk to wherever it's mounted. Renogy also says it is compatible with the Renogy ONE M1 and Core. The unit has its own LCD display as well.

Protection and certifications

Renogy lists protection against overload, overcharge, over-discharge, short circuit and over temperature. The certifications named are FCC Class A Part 15, UL458 and CSA-C22.2 No. 107.1. As with any electrical equipment, follow the manual and local electrical codes for wiring, fusing and ventilation, or have a qualified installer do the work.

Size and weight

The unit measures about 20.1 x 11.2 x 7.6 inches (51 x 28 x 19 cm) and weighs 63.5 lb (about 29 kg). That's heavy enough that you should plan a solid mounting surface.

Who it suits

It suits people building a 12V battery system who want one unit to supply mains power and charge the bank: RV and van owners, cabin and off-grid setups, and home backup systems that run on a 12V battery.

What to check before you buy

  • System voltage: this is a 12V unit, so your battery bank must be 12V.
  • Your loads: add up the running watts and the starting surges of your appliances.
  • Battery chemistry: confirm your battery type is supported, and check the charging profile it needs.
  • Cabling and fusing: at this power level, the DC cables and fuses must be sized as the manual specifies.
  • Space and ventilation: allow room for mounting and airflow, and for the unit's weight.
  • Compatibility: if you want app monitoring, check that your phone and other Renogy equipment work with it.

The short version

  • A 12V inverter charger with 3000W continuous and 9000W peak pure sine wave output.
  • Efficiency above 90%, with adjustable 50/60Hz output.
  • Supports several battery types, with four-stage charging and a USER mode.
  • Bluetooth app monitoring, an LCD display and a list of built-in protections.
  • Listed as FCC Class A Part 15, UL458 and CSA-C22.2 No. 107.1; about 63.5 lb.
