The Lockly Visage Zeno (model PGK728WRHK) is a smart deadbolt that can open the door by recognising your face. It also has a fingerprint sensor, a keypad, built-in Wi-Fi and support for Apple Home Key. It is meant as a replacement for a standard deadbolt on a front door.

Face recognition

Lockly says the lock detects your face as you walk up and opens automatically, using dual infrared sensors so it works in any lighting, including at night. The brand states that facial data is encrypted and stored on the device. Face unlocking suits people with their hands full, but as with any biometric system, read the manual on enrolling users and on how to set sensitivity.

Fingerprint and six ways to unlock

The 3D biometric fingerprint sensor uses AI learning and stores up to 99 prints; Lockly rates recognition at about 0.2 seconds. The six methods it lists are fingerprint, the Lockly Home app, keypad, physical key, Apple Watch, and Alexa or Google voice assistants. The PIN Genie keypad is named in the title; Lockly's version shuffles digit positions so the code is hard to read over a shoulder.

Apple Home Key

Home Key lets you hold an iPhone or Apple Watch near the lock to open it. Lockly says it works even when the device is out of power, which is how Apple describes Express Mode on supported devices. You can share access, ask Siri to unlock and build automations in the Apple Home app. Check that your devices support Home Key.

Built-in Wi-Fi and the app

The lock has Wi-Fi built in, so Lockly says no bridge is required. In the Lockly Home app you can lock and unlock remotely, share or revoke access, and check activity. Built-in Wi-Fi uses more power than a lock without it, which is why battery design matters.

Batteries

It comes with two 10,000mAh rechargeable lithium batteries. Lockly says they last up to six months with normal use, though frequency of use changes that. Keep the physical key in a safe place in case the batteries run flat.

Fit and installation

The lock fits right- or left-swing doors between 1 3/8 and 2 inches thick. Lockly says installation takes about 15 minutes with common household tools. Its overall dimensions are listed as 8.0 x 8.8 x 5.3 inches, which is a package size and not a guide to how much the lock protrudes.

Who it suits

It suits households that want hands-free entry, families with several users who each need their own access, and Apple Home users who want one-tap unlocking.

What to check before you buy

  • Door: check thickness, bore holes and backset against the manual.
  • Phones and watches: Home Key needs compatible Apple devices.

  • Privacy: read how face and fingerprint data are stored and how users are removed.
  • Backup access: know where the physical key and charging cable are.
