The DEWENWILS Smart Temperature Controller is a plug-in thermostat. You plug a heater, fan or similar device into it, set a temperature range, and it switches that device on and off to hold the range. It rates 15A and connects to an app, so you can watch and adjust settings remotely.

How a plug-in controller works

A temperature controller like this sits between the wall outlet and the device. A probe measures the temperature, and the controller cuts or restores power depending on your settings. It does not generate heat or cooling itself, so it is only as useful as the device you plug in. A heater, for example, runs only when the temperature falls below your target.

Six control modes

DEWENWILS lists six modes: Cooling + Timer, Heating + Timer, Cooling, Heating, Timer and OFF. The brand says the controller manages devices using the temperature range, differential values and app schedules. A differential, sometimes called hysteresis, is the gap between switching on and off. A wider gap means fewer switching cycles, while a narrower one holds the temperature more tightly.

Range and accuracy

The adjustable range is -40°F to 210°F (about -40°C to 99°C) with 0.1°F accuracy as rated by DEWENWILS. That covers freezers at one end and warm environments at the other. The brand names reptile care, greenhouses, fermentation chambers and aquariums as applications. For living animals, plants or food, always check that the controller's range and the heating device you pair with it suit the needs of what you're keeping, and follow the manuals.

Power outage memory

If the power goes out, the controller restores its previous settings when power returns, so you don't have to reset it. DEWENWILS mentions freezers, incubators and reptile enclosures as places where this matters. It's worth remembering that the controller can only act when power is present, and the app features rely on your Wi-Fi.

App control and display

The app lets you check temperature, adjust settings and set schedules from anywhere. The LCD has a black background with white text and a backlight, so mode and temperature can be read at a glance without the app.

What to check before you buy

  • Load. The unit is rated at 15A, so check the current draw of the device you plug in and stay within it.
  • Whether your device suits being switched by an outlet. Some appliances have their own thermostats or need to stay powered.
  • The probe's placement, since readings depend on where the sensor sits.
  • Wi-Fi coverage where you'll use it.
  • Certification marks and instructions on the product, and follow local electrical codes and the manual.

The short version

  • Plug-in, app-connected thermostat rated at 15A.
  • Six modes, including heating and cooling with timers.
  • Adjustable from -40°F to 210°F with 0.1°F accuracy, per DEWENWILS.
  • Restores settings after a power outage and has a backlit LCD.
