The DESLOC D212 is a smart door knob lock that opens with a fingerprint, a passcode, a phone app or a backup key. Built-in Wi-Fi connects it to the app without a separate hub, so you can manage who comes in from anywhere. Here is what its features mean, and what to measure before you replace an existing knob.

Four ways to unlock

The keypad on the outside combines a fingerprint reader and a number pad on tempered glass. The lock holds up to 50 fingerprints and 100 passcodes, and two backup keys come with it for the keyed cylinder in the knob. The app can also lock or unlock the door.

DESLOC says fingerprint data is stored locally on the lock and never uploaded to the cloud. Keeping biometric data on the device means it doesn't depend on an online account to work at the door.

App control and access permissions

Through the app you can lock or unlock remotely, view activity records showing when the door was used, and create temporary passcodes. Each user can get their own permissions, such as always, scheduled, one-time or temporary access. That suits a cleaner who comes on set days, a dog walker, guests or tenants in a shared or rental space, since a code can be removed without changing keys.

The listing doesn't state which Wi-Fi band the lock uses. Many smart locks connect only on 2.4 GHz, so check the manual and make sure your router's signal reaches the door.

Auto-lock and batteries

Auto-lock can be set from 5 to 120 seconds, so the knob locks again on its own after you go through. DESLOC lists about eight months of battery life from a set of eight AA batteries, which aren't included. Wi-Fi use and the number of daily entries typically affect how long batteries last. The app sends low-battery alerts, and a USB-C port on the outside accepts emergency power if the batteries run flat.

Build, water resistance and certification

The body is aluminum alloy, and the keypad is tempered glass. DESLOC lists IPX4 water resistance, which in the standard IP system means protection against splashing water from any direction; that suits a sheltered door rather than one exposed to driving rain.

The lock is certified to BHMA Grade 3. In the ANSI/BHMA system, Grade 1 is the heaviest duty and Grade 3 is the residential grade. As a knob lock, it secures the door with a latch rather than a deadbolt, so for a main entrance many households also fit a separate deadbolt. Follow the manual for installation and use.

Will it fit your door?

DESLOC says it fits most standard US and Canadian doors and installs with basic household tools. Its fitting guide lists a door thickness of 1-3/8 to 2 inches, a 2-1/8 inch bore hole, a 1 inch latch hole and a backset of 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches. It is not suitable for glass or metal doors, or for mortise-style locks.

Who it suits

It suits bedrooms, home offices, apartments, garages and side entry doors, and households, roommates or hosts who want to share and remove access without handing out keys.

What to check before you buy

  • Door measurements: thickness, bore hole, latch hole and backset against the figures above.
  • Door type: standard wooden or composite doors, not glass or metal.
  • Wi-Fi: a reliable signal at the door and the band your router uses.
  • Batteries: eight AA batteries, bought separately.
  • Weather: IPX4 suits sheltered doors; consider exposure before fitting it outside.
