The ARCCAPTAIN Cut55 is a portable plasma cutter that runs on either 120V or 240V and delivers up to 55 amps. It uses a non-touch pilot arc, so the torch doesn't have to touch the metal to start cutting. Here is what its specs mean for cut thickness, power, air supply and everyday use.
How a pilot arc plasma cutter works
A plasma cutter sends compressed air through a narrow nozzle and passes an electric arc through it. The arc turns the air into very hot plasma, which melts the metal and blows it out of the cut. Because it needs a conductive workpiece, plasma cutting works on steel, stainless steel and aluminium, which ARCCAPTAIN's images show.
A pilot arc starts inside the torch before it reaches the workpiece. The Cut55 uses a high-frequency, non-touch start, so you can begin a cut on rusted or painted metal without scratching through to bare steel first. ARCCAPTAIN says this also reduces electrode wear and energy use when the torch isn't cutting.
Cut thickness on 120V and 240V
ARCCAPTAIN rates the Cut55 for a clean cut of 1/2 inch and a maximum cut of 3/4 inch, both at 55A on 240V (at 60 and 75 PSI respectively). On 120V, the current range is 20 to 35A, and on 240V it is 20 to 55A, so thicker material needs the 240V supply.
A "clean cut" is a cut with a reasonably smooth edge at a usable travel speed, while a "maximum cut" is the thickest the machine can sever, usually slowly and with a rougher edge. Plan around the clean-cut figure for regular work. ARCCAPTAIN also notes not to switch voltages until the screen is off and the fan has stopped.
Air supply
The Cut55 needs compressed air, and a compressor is not included. ARCCAPTAIN gives about 60 PSI and 5.3 CFM as the target. The compressor needs to deliver that flow continuously, not just in a short burst, so check the CFM it delivers at the stated pressure rather than its tank size alone.
An air filter is mounted at the rear, an internal sensor reads the air pressure, and a regulator sets it. Clean, dry air generally helps consumables last longer and keeps cuts consistent, so draining the compressor tank regularly is good practice.
Presets, 2T/4T and duty cycle
Air pressure is preset to 60 PSI and post-flow to 5 seconds. Post-flow keeps air running after a cut to cool the torch head, which ARCCAPTAIN says helps the consumables last. In practice, you choose the voltage, set the current with the knob and start cutting.
In 2T mode, the torch cuts while you hold the trigger. In 4T mode, you press and release to start and press again to stop, which is easier on the hand during long cuts.
ARCCAPTAIN lists a 60% duty cycle. Duty cycle describes how much of a 10-minute period a machine can run before it needs to cool, so 60% means about six minutes of cutting followed by a rest. The listing doesn't state the current this figure applies to. The torch is an AG60 type, useful to know when ordering tips and electrodes.
Build, protections and portability
ARCCAPTAIN lists overload, overcurrent and overheating protection, IP21S protection against dripping water, and FCC and ANSI certifications. The machine weighs 19.8 lb and comes with a shoulder strap. Plasma cutting produces intense light, sparks, heat and fumes, so wear suitable eye and skin protection, work with good ventilation away from flammable materials, and follow the manual.
Who it suits
It suits home garages, farm workshops and metal fabrication where cuts in sheet and plate steel up to about 1/2 inch are routine, and where a compressor is already on hand.
What to check before you buy
- Power: confirm you have a suitable 240V circuit for thicker cuts, or accept the 35A limit on 120V.
- Air: check that your compressor delivers about 5.3 CFM at 60 PSI continuously.
- Thickness: compare your usual material with the 1/2-inch clean-cut figure.
- Consumables: plan for AG60-type tips and electrodes.
- Protective gear: plan for proper eye protection, gloves and ventilation where you work.
The short version
- A 55A plasma cutter that runs on 120V (20-35A) or 240V (20-55A).
- Non-touch, high-frequency pilot arc that works on rusted or painted metal.
- Rated 1/2-inch clean cut and 3/4-inch maximum cut on 240V.
- Needs a compressor (about 60 PSI, 5.3 CFM); presets of 60 PSI and 5 s post-flow; 2T/4T modes.
- 60% duty cycle, 19.8 lb, with a shoulder strap and an AG60 torch.
