The ZyXEL NWA55AXE is a WiFi 6 access point built for outdoor mounting. It extends a wired network into places such as yards, car parks, patios and the gaps between buildings, where an ordinary indoor router would not survive or reach.
What an access point is
An access point connects to your network by a cable and provides wireless coverage from that point. Unlike a consumer router, it does not run the network itself. It is usually one of several units in a larger setup, which makes it common in small businesses, campuses, holiday parks and larger properties.
WiFi 6 and AX1800
WiFi 6 (802.11ax) is the generation that improved how a network handles many devices at once. "AX1800" is a combined figure: ZyXEL describes speeds of up to 1.8Gbps across two bands, with dual 2x2 MU-MIMO. The 2x2 means two spatial streams on each band, and MU-MIMO lets the access point talk to several devices at the same time rather than one after another. The 1.8Gbps is a total across both bands; a single device gets less.
Weather protection
The listing says it is designed for harsh outdoor environments, with up to IP55 weatherproofing. In the IP code, the first digit (5) refers to dust protection and the second (5) to water jets. It is built to be mounted outside, but installation should follow the manual, including how cables are sealed and where the unit is placed.
Mesh and roaming
ZyXEL says the Smart Mesh feature forms wireless links automatically to bridge networks between buildings, reducing the need to run cables through difficult spaces. The listing also mentions seamless roaming, which lets a phone or laptop move between access points without dropping a call or session. Roaming quality also depends on the devices.
Security and management
The access point supports WPA3-PSK, the newer WiFi security standard. It can be managed from the cloud, through an app or directly on the device, which gives smaller sites a choice between a central dashboard and a local setup.
Power: PoE+ injector
Instead of a power socket outside, the unit gets power through its Ethernet cable using PoE+ (Power over Ethernet). A PoE+ injector is included, so you need only a network cable and an indoor outlet where the injector sits. If your switch already provides PoE+, you may not need the injector.
Size
The unit measures about 7.6 x 8.8 x 2.4 inches (19 x 22 x 6 cm) and weighs about 1.3 lb (0.6 kg).
Who it suits
It suits businesses with outdoor seating, warehouses and yards, campuses, holiday parks, and homeowners with detached garages or workshops that already have a network cable available.
What to check before you buy
- Cable run: Ethernet has a distance limit of about 100 m, and the cable should be rated for outdoor use.
- Mounting: check the mounting hardware and the best height and position for coverage.
- Coverage: the range depends on walls, trees and the devices you use.
- Management choice: decide between cloud, app and direct management.
- Network: check your switch, router and the number of devices.
- Electrical safety: follow local codes and the manual for outdoor installation.
