The Cisco Business CBW150AX is a Wi-Fi 6 access point for small business workplaces. It adds wireless coverage to an existing wired network, mounts on a ceiling or wall, and comes with a Power over Ethernet injector so one cable can carry both data and power.

What Wi-Fi 6, 2x2 and dual band mean

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is a wireless standard that typically handles many connected devices better than older generations. "2x2" refers to two transmit and two receive antennas, a common layout that supports good speeds for laptops and phones. Dual band means it works on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands: 2.4 GHz usually reaches further, and 5 GHz is typically faster at shorter range. Cisco describes the performance as enterprise-grade for small businesses.

Power over Ethernet and mounting

The access point has one 1 GbE port. The included PoE injector sits between your switch or router and the access point, delivering power through the same network cable. That means no separate power outlet is needed where you mount it. If your switch already provides PoE, you may not need the injector.

Cisco lists wall or ceiling mounting, and the mounting kit is included. Ceiling placement is common because it spreads coverage evenly across a room. The unit is compact, at 5.9 x 5.9 x 1.6 inches.

Setting up and managing it

Cisco says setup takes minutes, and that you can manage and monitor the network from the Cisco Business Mobile app or a web browser. Check the manual for the first-time steps, as they depend on how your network is arranged.

Security features

The listing refers to enterprise-class security and Cisco Umbrella integration, which Cisco says helps keep malware, phishing and other threats from compromising your network. Umbrella is a Cisco service, so check what it needs and how it is licensed.

Growing coverage

One access point covers a limited area. Cisco says you can mix it with other Cisco Business Wi-Fi 6 access points and mesh extenders to expand coverage, and that it works with Cisco Business 151AXM Mesh Extenders. This suits a small office that may add units later. The brand also lists 3-year hardware protection; read its terms to see what applies.

Who it suits

It is aimed at small business workplaces, offices and shops that want managed indoor Wi-Fi 6 without a large controller setup. It's described as ideal for indoor coverage, so it isn't intended for outdoor use.

What to check before you buy

  • Coverage area: walls and floors affect Wi-Fi, so think about how many units you need.
  • Wired connection: you need a network cable run to the mounting spot.
  • Power: use the injector or a PoE-capable switch, and follow the manual and local electrical codes.
  • Client devices: older devices won't use Wi-Fi 6 features.
  • Management: check the app or browser interface meets your needs.
  • Add-ons: confirm any security service requirements.
