The Zyxel GS1900-48HPV2 is a rackmount smart-managed switch with 48 Gigabit Ethernet ports, 24 of them supplying Power over Ethernet, and two SFP slots. It is aimed at small and mid-sized networks that need many wired connections plus power for devices such as access points, IP phones and cameras.

Ports and layout

Zyxel lists 48 Gigabit Ethernet ports plus 2 SFP slots, which is why the product is also described as a 50-port switch. SFP slots take optional fibre or copper modules and are typically used for uplinks to another switch or to a server room. The switch measures about 10.6 x 17.4 x 1.7 inches and weighs 7.8 lb, which is the width of a standard 19-inch rack and one rack unit high.

What the PoE power limit means

Power over Ethernet sends power and data through the same cable. Zyxel lists 24 PoE+ ports supporting 802.3af and 802.3at, with up to 30W per port and a 170W total limit. That total is the number to plan around: the switch can't give 30W to all 24 ports at once, since 24 x 30W is 720W. Many devices use far less, but check your devices' power draw against the 170W total.

Zyxel also lists a "Consumption Mode", which allocates power according to what each device actually uses rather than reserving the maximum. The brand says this lets the same total power more devices at once.

Smart-managed features

"Smart-managed" sits between an unmanaged switch and a full enterprise one. Zyxel lists a web-based setup wizard for quick configuration. The Layer 2 features are:

  • VLANs, which separate groups of devices, such as phones, cameras and office computers.
  • QoS, which can prioritise traffic such as voice.
  • IGMP snooping, for multicast traffic.
  • Link aggregation (LAG), which combines ports for more bandwidth or redundancy.
  • IPv6 support and DoS prevention, which Zyxel says help with security and management.

Warranty

Zyxel lists a limited lifetime warranty and free firmware upgrade support. Check the terms with Zyxel, as they can differ by region.

Who it suits

It suits small offices, schools and shops that need dozens of wired connections, and installers setting up an access point and camera network from a single cabinet. It is probably more than a typical home needs.

What to check before you buy

  • PoE needs: total the wattage of the devices you plan to power and compare it with the 170W total.
  • PoE ports: only 24 of the 48 ports supply power; plan which devices go where.
  • Rack space: confirm you have a 19-inch rack or a shelf, and room for airflow and cables.
  • Uplink: decide whether you will use the SFP slots and which modules you need.
  • Noise and heat: switches in this class typically have fans, so consider where it will sit.
  • Management skills: a smart-managed switch rewards some network knowledge; read the manual first.

The short version

  • 48 Gigabit ports plus 2 SFP slots, rackmount, model GS1900-48HPV2.
  • 24 PoE+ ports (802.3af/at), up to 30W each, 170W total limit.
  • Smart-managed with VLAN, QoS, IGMP snooping, LAG and IPv6 support.
  • Web-based setup wizard.
  • Limited lifetime warranty, as listed.
