The Zyxel GS1900-24EP is a 24-port Gigabit Ethernet switch that can also power compatible devices over the network cable. It is a "smart managed" model, which means you can configure VLANs, traffic priorities and other settings through a web interface. It is aimed at small offices, shops and larger home networks that want cameras, access points or phones powered from one place.

What 24 Gigabit ports give you

Each port runs at up to 1 Gbps, the standard speed for wired office and home networks today. Twenty-four ports is enough to connect a mix of computers, printers, servers and wireless access points without chaining several smaller switches together. The switch is designed for rack mounting, so it fits a standard network rack or cabinet, although it can also sit on a shelf where the manual allows.

How PoE+ works here

Power over Ethernet (PoE) sends electricity along the same cable that carries data. That removes the need for a separate power adapter and a nearby outlet at each device. The listing names 802.3af and 802.3at (PoE+) support, with up to 30W available per port. Typical PoE devices include IP cameras, ceiling-mounted wireless access points and desk phones.

The model name points to 12 PoE+ ports. The listing gives the total PoE power in two ways: "12x PoE+ @ 130W" in the product name and a 100W total in the feature list. Because those figures differ, check the manufacturer's datasheet for the exact number for your unit. That total is the power shared by all powered devices, so add up what your devices draw before planning around it.

Consumption Mode

Zyxel says its "Consumption Mode" allocates power according to what each device is actually drawing, instead of reserving the maximum its power class allows. In general, this lets a fixed power total serve more devices, because many PoE devices draw less than their class limit most of the time.

Smart managed features

Smart managed switches sit between plug-and-play unmanaged models and fully managed enterprise ones. Zyxel lists these Layer 2 features:

  • VLANs, which separate traffic into logical groups, such as office, guest and camera networks.
  • QoS, which gives priority to time-sensitive traffic such as voice calls.
  • IGMP snooping, which keeps multicast traffic from flooding every port.
  • Link aggregation (LAG), which combines ports for more bandwidth or a backup path.
  • IPv6 support and DoS prevention.

A web-based setup wizard is meant to get the switch running in minutes.

Warranty and firmware

Zyxel describes a limited lifetime warranty and free firmware upgrades. The terms of a warranty vary by region and by seller, so read the conditions that apply where you live.

Who it suits

It suits small businesses and well-equipped homes that want to power several PoE devices from one point and keep different kinds of traffic separate. If you only need extra Ethernet ports and no PoE, a simpler unmanaged switch may be enough.

What to check before you buy

  • PoE needs: list the devices you plan to power, their standard (af or at) and their draw, and compare the total with the switch's PoE power total.
  • Port count: confirm how many of the 24 ports provide PoE and which do not.
  • Mounting: check that you have a rack or a safe shelf, and room for airflow.
  • Features: make sure the VLAN, QoS and other settings you need are covered.
  • Uplinks: check how the switch connects to your router or the rest of your network.
  • Cabling: use suitable Ethernet cable, and follow the manual for installation.

The short version

  • A 24-port Gigabit smart managed switch from Zyxel, model GS1900-24EP.
  • PoE and PoE+ (802.3af/at) with up to 30W per port on the PoE ports.
  • Layer 2 features: VLAN, QoS, IGMP snooping, link aggregation, IPv6 and DoS prevention.
  • Web-based setup wizard and Consumption Mode power allocation.
  • Confirm the PoE power total (listed as both 130W and 100W) with the datasheet.
