The YOWHICK GDP1W is a portable home projector with built-in speakers, WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3. It comes with a 100-inch screen and is designed for movie nights indoors or out. Because projector specs are often confusing, here is what the main numbers mean.

Native 1080P and 4K support

YOWHICK lists a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) and says it supports 4K input. Those are different things. "Native" is the number of pixels the projector actually draws. A 4K signal can be accepted and then scaled down to fit a 1080P panel. So the picture is Full HD, but you can connect a source that outputs 4K.

What 22000L means

The brightness is listed as 22000L. Brightness figures like this are often marketing "lumens" taken from the light source rather than ANSI lumens, the standard measurement, so they aren't directly comparable. In practice, the room matters most: projectors look best in a dark or dim space, and an outdoor screening usually works best after sunset.

YOWHICK also says the colour range reaches 80% of NTSC and up to 17 million colours.

Screen size, zoom and keystone

The projector can display from 40 to 450 inches, in 4:3 or 16:9. The size depends on distance: the further back, the bigger the picture, within the projector's focus range. A 50-100% zoom adjusts the picture size without moving the projector, and 15° keystone correction squares the image if the projector sits at an angle. Keystone correction is handy, but a straight-on position generally gives the sharpest picture.

Connections and streaming

Dual-band WiFi 6 and 2.4G connection let you mirror a phone screen. Bluetooth 5.3 lets you pair speakers or headphones. For physical connections, the listing names HDMI, USB, VGA, AV and audio ports for phones, TV sticks, USB drives, laptops, DVD players and game consoles.

The listing also notes that protected streaming services need a TV stick or an HDMI cable, and the stick isn't included. That is common with projectors that mirror a screen.

Sound

YOWHICK lists built-in stereo speakers with a subwoofer. Small built-in speakers are fine for casual viewing, but an external speaker over Bluetooth or the audio port gives fuller sound for a bigger space.

Size and weight

It measures about 9.0 x 7.0 x 3.0 inches (23 x 18 x 8 cm) and weighs about 3 lb (1.4 kg), which makes it easy to carry between rooms or to the garden. YOWHICK lists a two-year warranty and technical support.

Who it suits

It suits casual home cinema, backyard movie nights, gaming on a larger picture and occasional presentations, especially for people who want a ready-to-go set with a screen.

What to check before you buy

  • Room light: how dark the room can get, as brightness matters most in daylight.
  • Throw distance: the distance from projector to wall for the screen size you want.
  • Sources: which port your devices need, and whether you need an adapter.
  • Streaming: if you plan to watch streaming services, whether you have a TV stick.
  • Sound: whether the built-in speakers are enough or you want an external one.
  • Power: an outlet or extension cable at the projector's position.
