The ASUS ProArt A1 is a Full HD LED projector that ASUS describes as the world's first Calman Verified professional projector. It combines 3000 lumens of brightness with factory colour calibration, a built-in speaker and plenty of inputs, so it can serve as a home cinema, a presentation tool or a display for creative work.

What 3000 lumens means in practice

Lumens measure how much light a projector puts out. A figure around 3000 is typically bright enough to give a usable picture in a room with some light, rather than only in a fully darkened space. Darker rooms will still give the best contrast. The A1 uses an LED light source, which ASUS says lasts up to 30,000 hours. LEDs also tend to reach full brightness quickly and avoid the lamp replacements that older projectors needed.

Colour accuracy and Calman verification

Calman is a widely used colour-calibration software suite, and ASUS says the A1 is factory pre-calibrated to Delta E below 2. Delta E expresses how far a displayed colour is from the target; lower numbers mean closer, and values under 2 are typically hard to tell apart by eye. ASUS lists coverage of 98% of sRGB and Rec. 709 and 83% of DCI-P3. Those figures matter to photographers, video editors and designers who want what they see on the wall to match their files.

Resolution, refresh rate and 4K input

The native resolution is 1920 x 1080. The projector accepts a 4K signal, which it scales to fit its Full HD panel, so a 4K source will connect but won't be displayed at 4K detail. ASUS lists a 120Hz refresh rate, which can make motion look smoother with compatible sources such as games.

Setting up: keystone and zoom

When a projector sits at an angle to the screen, the image turns into a trapezoid. The A1 offers four-corner and horizontal/vertical 2D keystone correction to square it up. Keep in mind that digital keystone adjustments can slightly soften the picture, so placing the projector as square-on as possible is usually better. An optical 1.2x zoom lets you adjust the image size without moving the unit.

Connections, wireless and sound

ASUS lists two HDMI ports, VGA, audio input and output, RS232 and two USB Type-A ports, enough for laptops, consoles and streaming devices. With the bundled USB Wi-Fi dongle, the projector supports wireless mirroring from iOS, Android and Windows 10 devices. A built-in 10W speaker handles basic audio, though many people use external speakers for a fuller cinema sound.

Size and who it suits

The projector measures 15.9 x 3.9 x 11.1 inches and weighs 12.6 lb (about 5.7 kg), so it is better suited to a fixed spot or occasional moves than to carrying daily. It suits people who want accurate colour in a home theatre, creatives reviewing work on a big screen, and small meeting or classroom setups.

What to check before you buy

  • Room light: decide how dark the room can get, and the screen or wall surface you will use.
  • Throw distance: check the manual's distance-to-image-size table against your room.
  • Sources: confirm your devices' connectors, and whether you need adapters.
  • Wireless mirroring: check that your devices and operating-system versions are supported.
  • Sound: consider whether 10W is enough for your space.
  • Software offers: the Adobe trial in the listing has its own dates and terms, so check them on ASUS's site.
