The AWOL VISION IC-A120 is a motorised tray that holds an ultra-short-throw (UST) projector and slides it forward or back. It is designed to let a UST projector sit on a normal cabinet or credenza yet still reach a large picture, up to 135 inches according to AWOL VISION, without the cabinet being pushed away from the wall.

Why UST projectors need precise placement

A UST projector sits very close to the wall or screen and throws the image upward at a steep angle. The distance from the wall decides the picture size: moving the projector away makes the image bigger, and closer makes it smaller. Because the range between the smallest and largest picture is only a few inches, getting the position right matters. A tray that slides in small steps makes that adjustment possible, and it also lets the projector retreat when not in use.

Automatic sync with the projector

The tray connects to the projector with a signal cable. AWOL VISION says it slides out when the projector turns on and slides back when it turns off. The description says the signal comes over the projector's USB port, so the projector needs a port that provides it. This means the projector sits tucked away in the cabinet when off, and in position when on, with no manual movement.

Presetting the distance

No app or complex set-up is needed, says AWOL VISION. You set the distance you want, wait about 30 seconds, and the tray remembers that last position. The sliding distance is configurable, which helps you match different screen sizes and room layouts.

Build, load and noise

The tray is made of aluminium alloy and is rated for loads up to 44 lb (20 kg), so check your projector's weight against that. A brushless motor drives the movement, which AWOL VISION says makes the slide smooth and quiet. The tray measures about 14.8 x 21.7 x 2.7 inches (38 x 55 x 7 cm) and weighs 19.8 lb (about 9 kg).

Mounting and compatibility

Two installation options are given: attach it to a TV cabinet or attach it to the wall. AWOL VISION says it is compatible with all UST projectors, while noting that the maximum image size varies between brands. It is built with AWOL VISION projectors in mind, so a different make may need extra checks.

Who it suits

It suits home theatre setups where a UST projector sits on a credenza or a low cabinet and the owner wants a larger picture, or a tidy way of moving the projector out only when it is in use.

What to check before you buy

  • Projector weight: keep the projector under the 44 lb (20 kg) limit.
  • Footprint: compare the projector's base with the tray's size, and the cabinet depth with the tray's travel.
  • Signal connection: confirm that your projector offers the USB or signal output needed for the power sync.
  • Image size: the maximum picture depends on your projector model, so check its throw ratio chart.
  • Mounting: check cabinet or wall strength and the fixings you will need.
  • Cabling: leave slack so power and video cables can follow the tray's movement.

The short version

  • A motorised aluminium slider tray for UST projectors, with up to 135-inch pictures cited.
  • Slides out and back automatically with the projector's power through a signal cable.
  • Remembers the preset position; supports up to 44 lb (20 kg).
  • Cabinet or wall installation; about 14.8 x 21.7 x 2.7 inches.
