The AWOL VISION LTV-3000 Pro is a 4K ultra short throw (UST) laser projector for home theatres. It sits close to the wall and projects a large image, with the brand quoting screens up to 150 inches, so it can replace a television in the living room.

Ultra short throw explained

A UST projector sits only a short distance from the screen, typically with its base against or near the wall. This avoids ceiling mounting and removes the shadows people cast when they walk in front of a conventional projector. It is usually paired with an ambient light rejecting (ALR) screen, which suits bright rooms. AWOL VISION says the LTV-3000 Pro works with its ALR Daylight screen.

Triple laser and 3000 lumens

The projector uses a triple laser (red, green and blue) design without a colour wheel. Using lasers for each colour generally gives vivid, saturated colour and long-lasting light sources. AWOL VISION rates the brightness at 3000 lumens, and says it gives remarkable clarity in most lighting conditions, day or night. As with any projector, a darker room still improves contrast.

Colour: BT.2020 and DCI-P3

The brand states 107% coverage of the BT.2020 colour gamut and 147% of DCI-P3, the standard used for digital cinema projection. These are manufacturer figures, and coverage above 100% is not what you see directly on screen; it indicates a wide colour range.

Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Atmos

The listing highlights Dolby Vision, which adjusts colour, contrast and brightness dynamically, and HDR10+. For sound it names Dolby Atmos, designed to place audio around and above the listener. Atmos in a projector typically depends on its speakers or on an external sound system connected to it.

3D and home automation

The projector can show 3D with active shutter glasses, for example from a 3D Blu-ray disc. The glasses are used with it, so check what is included. The Pro model adds PJLink IP control, intended for integration with automation systems such as Control4.

Energy use

AWOL VISION says laser technology lets the projector use about one-tenth of the energy of a conventional LED television. This is the brand's comparison; actual consumption depends on brightness settings and use.

Who it suits

This projector is aimed at home-cinema enthusiasts who want a very large 4K picture, HDR formats and 3D, and who may integrate it into a smart home. It is a substantial installation rather than a portable device.

What to check before you buy

  • Wall or cabinet space and distance from the screen, as per the installation guide.
  • Whether you will buy an ALR screen, and its size.
  • The projector's connections for your sources and sound system.
  • Whether you need 3D glasses and a 3D source.
  • Room lighting and how much ambient light you have.
  • Power needs, ventilation and fan noise.
