The HAPPRUN F5 is a compact home projector with native 1080P resolution, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a 100-inch screen in the box. It is meant for movie nights in a living room or bedroom, and for taking outdoors on a warm evening. It weighs 4.4 lb and measures about 9.1 x 7.6 x 3.3 inches.

Native 1080P and the 12,000 lumen claim

Native 1080P means the projector's panel has 1920 x 1080 pixels, so Full HD content is shown without being scaled up. HAPPRUN says it can project up to 300 inches on a smooth white wall and lists 12,000L brightness. Projector brightness figures are measured in different ways by different brands, and a number like this is often not comparable with ANSI lumens. In general, a dark room gives the best picture, and large image sizes look dimmer than small ones.

Connecting a phone

HAPPRUN offers one-step screen mirroring and supports dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi. HAPPRUN notes that streaming apps with copyright protection don't mirror directly from a phone. To play those you connect a laptop, a streaming stick, a wireless dongle or a similar box through HDMI.

Sound and Bluetooth

A built-in Hi-Fi speaker handles audio, and Bluetooth 5.2 pairs the projector with a speaker or soundbar. The listing says Bluetooth supports audio devices only, not smartphones or smart speakers. For a larger room, an external speaker generally gives more volume and depth than any small built-in one.

Ports

There are two USB ports, two HDMI ports, AV and an audio port. HAPPRUN lists compatibility with smartphones, laptops, USB drives, DVD players and game consoles. Having two HDMI inputs lets you leave, say, a console and a streaming stick connected at once.

The included screen

The 100-inch screen is portable and easy to pack away, which suits outdoor use. A projector can use a smooth white wall as well, but a screen generally gives a flatter, more even image. For outdoor viewing, think about ambient light, since dusk or darkness gives a clearer picture.

Warranty

HAPPRUN gives a 24-month warranty and asks owners to contact the company if there's a problem.

Who it suits

It suits people who want a movie or gaming screen larger than a TV without a permanent install, and those who want one portable unit for indoors and the backyard.

What to check before you buy

  • Room and distance: check the throw distance needed for your target picture size.
  • Streaming: plan how you'll play protected content, through a stick or laptop.
  • Light: judge how dark your space gets.
  • Audio: decide whether the built-in speaker is enough or you'll add one.
  • Setup: check how the focus and keystone adjustment work in the manual.
  • Power: you'll need an outlet nearby, including outdoors.
